Vermeule and other hardline right-wing academics severely overestimate how numerous and influential they have the potential to be, and also how many people are presently aware they exist and care about what they're doing.

It's likely that most of the anti-education right is basically incapable of distinguishing between Vermeule and any other academic, just like they have largely been incapable of recognizing and responding to rightward shifts in the MSM.

And yes, that's partly because of the perception of academia as left-wing, which Vermeule hopes to change, but as MSM outlets have learned in trying to pivot rightwards, perception is a powerful thing.

In fact, the non-Salazarist far right tends to be the exact opposite--extremely anti-academia and even anti-education in general. There really isn't much of a useful base for what Vermeule and others like him are pushing for.

I also want to say about this: there is no such thing as a self-enforcing international order. None. Not at any point in history. There is always an enforcer(s), and they always have a high level of prerogative abt how the ‘rules’ apply.

I do not, and now I'm intrigued

You run across the most fascinating people on the internet. Here's someone in the replies of a post about Max Miller being accused of beating his wife (Bernie Moreno's daughter) and he seems to be using it to...defend George Santos?

A lot of discourse around blue-collar manufacturing jobs is, bluntly, fueled by nostalgia-induced psychosis which tells people, incorrectly, that "back in the day", those were high-paying, prestigious jobs with good benefits leading to prosperous lifestyles. That's not true! It never has been!

Even if it were somehow economically viable for companies to reshore blue-collar manufacturing jobs in the name of revitalizing struggling Rust Belt communities, it would be very hard to actually pull off such a plan because people have to be willing to work those jobs!

There are very, very few people sitting around on crumbling front porches in Gloomsville, Michigan dreaming about the day when they can step into their father's shoes and work a low-paying, physically crushing factory job until they die of exhaustion or some horrible cancer at 60.

It would be different the US were experiencing crippling unemployment or underemployment right now, but it's broadly not! All available data shows that Americans by and large have jobs that they are reasonably qualified, but not excessively overqualified, for.

Americans want *other* people to have blue-collar manufacturing jobs. Their philosophy really isn't actually all that different from that of the companies making the decision to offshore manufacturing in the first place, but with some American nationalism and financial illiteracy sprinkled in.

I've been dogpiled before by Rust Belt leftists (or people cosplaying as such) for saying this, but the biggest problem with trying to return blue-collar manufacturing jobs to America is that, by and large, Americans don't want them and the job market doesn't have room for them.

One thing you can see in the latest Stancil blowup is that a sizable share of this website thinks that good intentions are the only thing that matter in policymaking, and expressing skepticism that a policy will really work as intended is equivalent to stealing food from the poor.

at a very basic level, 'this grocery is 30 percent cheaper than other groceries' incentives people to *go to that grocery from outside of the neighborhood.* When you're trying to alleviate a food desert you may not actually want people coming in and clearing the shelves early.

The Republican Party largely became what it is because it embraced unreconstructed Southerners in the 1960s. Its push to the far-right was almost entirely driven by neo-Confederates, so it's no surprise that it has become a heavily Confederate institution.

Frankly, the MAGA movement is probably most accurately described as a Confederate revanchist movement. That characterization does a pretty good job of explaining most of the movement's tendencies.

I think this is right. A lot of the MAGA political project effectively boils down to a preference for a poor, unstable society where white conservatives are at the top of the social hierarchy over a rich, cohesive society where anyone else might be at the top. Basically, Confederate thinking.
