China's strategic reserves, largest by far in the World, were largely filled in 2025 pre-war. With ME war, using reserves and demand destruction, China cut oil imports drastically, keeping the price moderated. Now, they will refill opportunistically and are rapidly adding storage capacity.

The reserve was intended to be a safeguard during war or conflict to fuel our own ships and planes. It’s been used repeatedly as a buffer for short term spikes, which I guess has some strategic value. But outright emptying, with no end in sight seems, well, a bad thing.
