I remember endless crowing about Biden draining the national reserves but he had them more stocked than anyone.

So what happens when it runs out? Will Americans have to queue for gas? That won’t be pretty.

#TheTrumpEconomy

I wonder if they are artificially keeping prices slightly lower than they would if there weren’t an election in November that could tip possible tip the balance of power in congress to Dems. Not saying prices are low now. Just wondering why they aren’t even higher under the current circumstances

You can count on Trumpists for historic levels of mismanagement and corruption

Trump is racing to make as much CASH as possible by seesawing the oil markets with wars & betting on it while his sons are cleaning up on drone companies with fast track Pentagon contracts. War is a profitable business & Trump got into it just in time. American are dying but Trumps are doing fine.

Good thing Trump is promoting EVs, right?

Ответ для OutJustInTime

And heavy investments into renewable energy, right?

As of last week, I had private inventories and the SPR at about 60% capacity. ~738mbl / ~1240. Private inventories were holding up well because the Trump administration had the SPR flowing.

Wait... I thought Trump said we had TONS of oil he stole from Venezuela?

Meanwhile in a country that’s invested in sustainable energy …

G

Do we have any idea of the net draw down rate?

Why? He has bought billions of $ from Venezuela Where is it + we have not been oil dependent in a long time. Why are we suddenly under this person?

It's not that long until harvest time....

The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), started in 1977, currently stands at 311 million barrels (notably lower than the lowest levels recorded during the Biden administration of 346). Republicans previously condemned drawing down the oil stockpile, yet they now defend it without reservations.

End of July will be interesting. #impeachmentoftrump

Great

Gas and heating oil is going to be brutal next winter …

Ответ для scout0914

The US gets most of its O&G from us yes?

Ответ для Laura

It doesn’t matter if the oil comes from us, the way the price is set is really based on supply/demand (this is basic economics). If there’s a shortage of supply around the world, the price goes up, otherwise it goes down — note the emphasis is “around the world”.

Ответ для scout0914

If a customer that once bought oil from the Middle East, suddenly loses access to that, then they will buy oil elsewhere, which then diminishes the supply around the world, which then brings the price up for everyone. This is basic economics, which Trump doesn’t understand based on his past posts.

Ответ для scout0914

The reason why this war is impacting the world economy is primarily because the price of oil impacts everyone around the world; it goes up for everyone regardless of where they get the oil from — that’s the nature of supply/demand economics.

Ответ для scout0914

Whether we want to accept it or not, the reality is, we live in a world economy. As much as we want to isolate ourselves, we can’t. It’s just not how the world works. Events around the world does impact supply chains. No one can fully isolate themselves in some island.

Ответ для scout0914

While the price of oil/gas has gone up here in the US, we actually haven’t felt the full impact of this war. Our govt has been using our oil reserves to lessen the blow, but now those oil reserves are running increasingly low that we’re not going to have any to limit the impact of this war by winter

It ironically looks just like Trumps stupid signature.

I don't know about Great but he made America the 1970s Again

Not a fan of this chart's Y-axis starting at 40 to give the impression it's even worse. Things are already bad enough without doing that.

How are gas prices not through the roof? Are they just eating the losses and hoping things will turn around before the supply ends?

Ответ для Serious Talk
Ответ для MadKatsMum

Yes, but that’s still on the low side, especially since the recent decline in oil prices was premised entirely on how there was a ceasefire with a memorandum of understanding about the intention to finalize the outlines of plans for a peace deal, not on the actual quantity of oil.

Ответ для Serious Talk

They'll eat some profits.... after they get their monthly statement from their broker, our prices will go up. Everyone buying electric cars is reducing their ability to get record profits. Everyone getting solar or wind power is cutting into future profits.

A smarter administration would now be aggressively focusing on demand destruction for oil. Then again, a smarter administration would not have started this mess in the first place.

Ответ для nate2077

China strategic reserves, largest by far in the World, were largely filled in 2025 pre-war. With war in the ME, because of their rate of demand destruction, China could cut oil imports drastically, keeping the price moderated. Now, they refill opportunistically and building more storage capacity.

"...like no one has ever seen before"; right, Donald?

America is literally collapsing under the weight of the Trump administration’s ignorance and willful destruction of our civil rights, economy, healthcare, safety net programs, education, immigration, basic mail service and possibly elections. Amazingly, about 1/3 of people are OK with it.

Funny how that looks like DJT's signature.

Oddly enough, this chart almost looks like Trump's signature.

Chat, is this good?

Ответ для Ward Q. Normal (he/him)

It's not accurate. The strategic reserve is not how much oil we have left. It's how much of the cheaper mix we have. West Texas, Europe, and China are pumping along. Without the medium MENA oil, WT light crude will need higher mix ratios with the heavy Europe and China oil to make gas.

Ответ для Erinn O'Dear

The reserve keeps the price of gas down. When we run out, and all there is is the expensive mix prices will skyrocket. There will be plenty. It'll just be more expensive.

Ответ для Erinn O'Dear

The refineries will also get to the point where they have to choose between producing gasoline or jet fuel.

Really seemed like they'd use the ceasefire time to replenish as much as possible, and not start shooting again until they'd built the reserves back up a bit. I suppose Netanyahu violating the MOU immediately and Iran re-closing the Strait kind of interfered with that.

So much Winning! 😑 Impeach his fat orange ass already.

Is that 43 days supply to what is referred to as tank bottoms? The lower part of the tank that requires more refining. Call me suspicious but if the USA has to replenish its strategic reserves will it buy oil from Venezuela and will the President benefit?

Ответ для stevedemos66

Wait. Aren't we currently stealing Venezuela's oil? They keep drawing the reserves down to ease price shocks from the Iran war and earlier, from the pandemic. What's left is not all usable as is. It feels precarious to me, especially since the SOH is essentially closed. Again.

Ответ для LD144

Trump was stealing the oil, yes. Oh, and he set up an offshore account to store this money... oh, and HE controls it. Apparently the GOP are trusting him with the money, I guess. He was also stealing oil meant for Cuba to make them more desperate for a deal.

Ответ для IMPEACH & REMOVE

43 days of supply doesn't mean we're running out in 43 days. It means what we have currently on hand is 43 times the amount we use each day, if supply continues to come up short then that number will drop, but not by 1 day per day.

Ответ для DVD

Oh, I get it. Thanks for the clarification.

Ответ для IMPEACH & REMOVE

Sorry, not implying that was just for you, just seeing a bunch of folks in the thread setting their doomsday clocks to 43 days. (But really it's probably closer to 90) haha

Ответ для DVD

No, I appreciate it. Even at 90 days, that puts us at mid-Oct. If we run down to nothing by mid-Oct., oil prices will skyrocket two weeks before the midterm. Hopefully, that will be clarifying for a few people that things are not going well.

Ответ для IMPEACH & REMOVE

2 years in, it's still somehow all Joe Biden's fault!

Any chance that recent precipitous drop has a connection to the, as yet unknown, companies operating the sketchy Freedom Fuels Network gas stations?

The USA also have control of Venezuelan reserves. Lucky for the USA they invaded Venezuela “not knowing” the strait of Hormuz would close if Iran was invaded by… the USA

If only we had reporters on TV who were willing to do actual work and report on this..... Also, on another note, I feel really really glad that last year I bought myself a hybrid car. Boy, was that a premonition or what? :)

So you’re saying Iran just has to wait us out another 43 days

finally, climate action

And I hope there are massive shortages, bankruptcies and other hardships. The US needs to feel what they've made hundreds of millions feel since the Kissinger years

We have so many concepts of a plan for dealing with that though.

For years, Trump and the MAGA nutters would whine about Biden bringing down the Reserves. Now look at the mess Trump has caused. Again.

So we could run out just before Labor Day Weekend?

The GOP

That seems bad

Thanks to Mr. Trump's decimation of the American and global economies.

My guess is they’ve been seeking it to refineries at the cheap price it went in. Then that has kept gas prices artificially low.

It'll be OK that's the thing about Americans we always escape the jaws of death at the last minute! LOLOLOLOLOOLOLOLOL

I guess we’ll have to stop using it. Free EVs for everyone!

China's strategic reserves, largest by far in the World, were largely filled in 2025 pre-war. With ME war, using reserves and demand destruction, China cut oil imports drastically, keeping the price moderated. Now, they will refill opportunistically and are rapidly adding storage capacity.

Was this his plan? To destroy us from inside the house? 🤔

Ответ для PJ Wiltshire

There could be a technical reason arising from the nature of the futures market, but Bloomberg had a piece boggling over why oil dropped to levels lower than right before Iran, despite it needing many months to get supplies back to normal even if there was a deal.

A net exporter, but what we export is what we don't use and what we import is. So even though we export more than we import that doesn't mean that we won't run out of oil that we need.

No, at least not in the US. What happens once oil inventories run out is that global prices will quickly escalate until demand matches supply. Rich economies will be able to sustain buying oil at those higher prices, while poor economies will be subjected to shortages.

Also, 45 days supply means enough oil to supply the US market for 45 days assuming no US oil production, but we do have oil production, so it would only be needed to fill the gap (on the other end of it, not all of that inventory is usable, it needs to remain in the pipes and tanks or they’ll break)

Ответ для Kellye Crane

Trump has also wiped out half of Russia's shadow fleet this year. No way that we aren't running short of oil this year

Ответ для ®PG🇵🇸

Generally, yes. There were efforts to extend the lifespan of the strategic petroleum reserve, I'm not sure how effective that was.

Ответ для dustyFox

We'll find out in a few weeks

Ответ для ®PG🇵🇸

Indeed. I was merely talking about the refurbishment, I am not denying the possibility of the salt domes collapsing.

But do oil companies have ability or want to increase production in US? They may see $$$$ signs.

Ответ для Sarah tB is here

I’m not talking about them increasing production. The “43 days” assumes no production (and complete availability of inventory, which also isn’t true), but the US produces over 13 million bbl/day of crude and condensates, and over 20 million bbl/day of total petroleum liquids.

Ответ для Whey Standard

Good point

Ответ для Sarah tB is here

We (the U.S.) do have limited capacity to process into usable products.

That's probably the point. He wants drill baby drill. He has "donors" to satisfy.

Ответ для Dawn

Ultimately, probably not, as very few of them have been actually drilling new wells in the US. The war is too uncertain, you could start drilling today and in a week prices are back to $60/bbl and you can't recoup your costs.

Ответ для Whey Standard

It means Trump's price buffer is going away and prices are going to go way up.

Ответ для Icefire9

Well, it takes time to process oil into useable products. If inventories do get low to out, the prices of already processed oil products will skyrocket as a result of limited supplies of those processed products. Or at least that’s what they’ll tell us, based on history of them telling us this.

Ответ для Vote, Organize, Do Good.

No. It is not how much oil there is. It's how much cheap oil there is. Everyone besides MENA is pumping and moving normally. Prices will just skyrocket because of the ratio of light (US, Venezuela, etc) with heavy (Europe, China) will change. MENA has medium crude, so a lower ratio, cheaper gasoline

That means more than just gas for your car. As fuel costs explode, anything that uses fuel to get from point A to B will go up. It'll still be there, just out of reach for many.

Hurricane season looks like it'll be relatively quiet but if some refineries go offline this summer, that creates a condition analysts refer to as being "turbo fucked"

Them’s peacemaking numbers!

Looks like his autograph

The reserve was intended to be a safeguard during war or conflict to fuel our own ships and planes. It’s been used repeatedly as a buffer for short term spikes, which I guess has some strategic value. But outright emptying, with no end in sight seems, well, a bad thing.

Cue Trump saying the war is won and the Strait is open and the Iranians are negotiating deal in the next couple days and he's so great for the 8th time or so.

lucky I gave up driving and eating plastics

I'm sure this is Joe Biden's fault, somehow?

I remember this madness.

1973 or close

I would ask why isn't this bigger news but God why bother?

If raping children can't change anything, can't motivate us, nothing will. Every day is a new horror and I guess no one can stop it. JFC, what a stupid timeline.

Ответ для BambiSaidWhat

Well, but if oil product prices soar, this might impact other businesses’ bottom lines, so the thing they DO care about ($$$) could motivate them.

Ответ для Ravenna

I'm old enough to remember when you could go days, even weeks without thinking about the government or the courts or explosive diarrhea.

Ответ для LD144

I also remember a time when you could turn on the news and actually be proud of something our government did.

Because a significant portion of the population must learn lessons the hard way. Another significant portion of the population also believes that lying will force reality to give way to their worldview.

Ответ для dustyFox

There’s research in the psychology of how fascism works that forcibly demanding that reality conforms to your prejudices can deform your understanding of how actions and thought work, to the point of believing that just spiting facts and science will make you correct and powerful by force of will

Ответ для Sabi Wolf

I'm going to assume that it always ends with reality hitting them like a ton of bricks. Or "It's OK, Steier's assault will bring the situation under control."

Daddy ! The tank’s on reserve !

The Republican Party is running huge risks to the American people to keep the cost of gas lower than it would have been. Even so I'm not sure they can keep it up to November.

Where'd all that Venezuelan crude we acquired go?
