I've found if I'm a fan of a book that's been made into a movie that I should not reread the book before seeing the movie. I did it once and got too caught up in the differences to enjoy a really fun movie.

Husband and I are chemists. We just snort at old episodes of “Columbo” (a chemist had a canister of heroin in his garage lab??) and “Quincy ME” (he could identify anything with his GC.) Madness. But “Breaking Bad?” *chef’s kiss*

plausible the mores seriously someone takes something, the less they enjoy seeing it trivialized not the same, but i took religion so seriously as a kid that i ended up an atheist lol

This is why I’ve never mustered up to effort to watch any of the Planet of the Apes movies.

Factual / technical errors tend to drag you out of the story. I find it very hard to watch anything which features scuba diving, for example, because it's almost always terribly wrong.

caring about dinosaurs is such a curse because it does mean I'm stuck with "the first jurassic park is the only good one"

And IMO a big part of being a grown up nerd is recognizing when something isn't for you and not getting your nickers in a twist about other people enjoying it

Huh. I'm a dino nerd who has happily watched all the Jurassic Park / World films. Most of them more than once. Though admittedly I did like Prehistoric Planet better.

The only exception I can think of to this is space nerds. I'm sure there are some space nerds that don't like spaceship fiction but most of them really really do

In my experience, my mileage for things has varied so much. I come at projects like these from multiple angles. If certain angles work well for me then I'm willing to make concessions for others. That said, inaccuracies in media have led to fun learning opportunities from me to friends and family ☺️

Are there many popular entertainment offerings about salamanders … ? 😏

I want to argue against this but all of my life experience supports it.

I think this might be accurate. I'm a horse nerd, but I can barely watch most "popular" horse movies/shows because they're so....wrong. There are a few good ones, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmeron, for example, is great! But a lot of them are just...painful.

This is why it's good when one of your nerd things is films, because then you know WHY it's like that. Sometimes that makes it better, but sometimes it makes it worse, though. XD

Yeah, that sounds right. It’s why I’m not going to bother- I’m just not a movie person these days ANYWAY, so between that and my 2/3rds of a classics degree? Not worth annoying everyone else. (I suspect it’d wind up very uncanny valley for me in a way that a more abstract version wouldn’t)

I give any film that claims to accurately portray spaceflight a miss, myself. I adopted that policy after seeing GRAVITY, which got *everything* wrong and managed to be pretentious while doing it.
