Just some kinda guy like this. Hilarious in person, just don't have the heart of a poster. Disability justice, trans rights, sci-fi, linguistics, I don't know. I'm interested in things. I'm not a real doctor but

The wrongness is layered. When I first looked at this I was amazed that the shapes mostly do not correspond to countries. I didn't notice until later that one of the little lines doesn't connect to a country name, or that the color of the dots doesn't always match the color of the "country"....

100 years ago my grandparents were around 10 years old, although I think at that point my maternal grandfather was a newsie and my paternal grandmother was working as a domestic servant. Later I would have options of carpenter, accountant, and trolley conductor, so I pick that last one

Revan

Enough “what would you do on the commune questions” If you got sent back 100 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?

I think I gotta go with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. I don't actually have a copy and I'm not sure how long I can go verbatim. Here comes H up the coconut tree. Oh I can't actually remember L. So I think I can swing 50-60k.

You’re caught unawares and offered $1000 per correct word if you recite any existing piece of text you know - accumulating up to the point you make your first mistake. How much do you walk away with?

This is a great visualization and I want to talk about it a lot

How the Words We Teach English Language Learners Changed, and What That Says About Us. “The shifts reflect a life that moved further from its own making: less tied to tools, animals, food…; more tied to global institutions, categories, systems…” [pudding.cool]

More than one bad guy, more than one bad guy,

Claire Willett

okay I’m starting a new thread because the last one was getting unwieldy but the dark corners of the right-wing Catholic internet have yielded some answers and I think the abbot may also have been evil this is internecine drama among villains and, spoiler alert, it all goes back to antisemitism!

Man I gotta start exercising before I shift my sleep schedule to where it naturally falls It's not my fault pre dawn is the most comfortable time to fall asleep. I was useful in hunter gatherer cultures for this.

Who says search it up? The only place I have heard "search it up" was on a little PBS Kids shorts series about tech literacy that was already old when my kid was watching it in 2020. Kids say "look it up" which is just general and regular

Mark Harris

I'm actually fine with sounding old.

Imagining the utter meltdown this guy would have if a Dem campaign office hung a sign on the wall that said "It's the economy, stupid"

I voted for the first time in 1992 so it annoys me when pundits like Yglesias urge a Clinton/Gore model for success. First off, while Clinton/Gore were more conservative on some key issues than Dukakis (death penalty, welfare) they didn't openly promote regressive views on culture.

This is part of their narrative right now. My sister lives in Germany and has for years, and a few months ago my dad started warning her that it might not be safe for her as an American anymore 😐😐😐

Neil Lewis, Jr.

So the U.S. has gotten itself into a situation where the State Department is now warning Americans about traveling...anywhere. "The Department of State advises Americans worldwide to exercise increased caution." travel.state.gov/en/internati...

Everyone is correctly talking about how it is bullshit to accuse kids over an em dash, but I'd like to point out also, the idea here is that you need a computer program to find an em dash

oh come on

Great thread

Twice a year, Hawai'i experiences a strange moment where the sun appears to be exactly overhead & anything that is completely vertical casts no shadow. Let's learn about Lāhainā Noon, subsolar points & 'Kau ka lā i ka lolo', meaning "the sun rests on the brains."

One thing I had never thought about before that struck me as grossly obvious this time was Star Wars as the fantasy of a generation that felt robbed of the chance to fight in a just war

Casey

We showed the 11 yo Star Wars for the first time tonight. It is REALLY hard for that kid to watch a movie. We watched one with a bunch of people couple weeks ago and I thought it was a good sign but with just us he was only BARELY capable of not talking over it. Constantly "wait, go back?"

Up at night because of the blood. It's the less bad blood (high; not good but less urgent) but the damn insulin isn't kicking in so the alarm is gonna go off again in 15-20 min

My actual first r rated movie, I was old enough that it didn't matter. BUT when I was 10 years old I was on a plane that showed the PG edit of My Cousin Vinny and it blew me away I later insisted to my friend's mom that she should let us watch her copy because there WERENT even any bad words in it

Patrick Klepek

Do you remember what *your* first R-rated movie was? I finally asked my mom (I couldn't remember), and she told me it was The Lost Boys when I was roughly the same age as my daughter (about 9). The movie traumatized her more than it did me, apparently

A drunk boomer once confided in me that he used to feel embarrassed to only have had like sixty partners when most of his friends had had hundreds. I think maybe they didn't ask David and his friends when they did this survey

Fannie Jack Hammer

I actually don't think is far off from reality. 3B people in this world, and between people I know IRL and what TikTok has opened my eyes to. I think it's more common than we think.
