"Ours is a beautiful, ancient craft essential for any society's needs for self-understanding. We are equipped with a host of modern methods, but guided ethically by very old rules that no authoritarian political project ought to be allowed to profane." www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbz2...

Canada is great, the US-Canada alliance was great—world’s longest land border and at peace! joint air defense! tons of money from trade! mutually enriching cultural exchange!—and this entirely Trump-caused damage to the relationship really sucks. For many reasons. So unnecessary. So self-harming.
What 'moderation' really means is adopting the views of a very small group of loud, centrist writers and their big business backers, and is increasingly out of step with (a) the big problems in the US and (b) the polling on what Americans say are the biggest problems they want government to fix.
Julia Azarilike 1/3 of the country can't breathe and we've had a parasite outbreak, we're in a perma-war with Iran, but resenting what other people get and policing kids sports teams seems like a top strategy to deal with that
This is who the religious right aligned with to win power and elections. If you’re using his products, buying his stock, dismissing his words, you’re part of the problem. He’s a blight to humanity. #ElonMusk
Greg SargentYep. @polphilpod.bsky.social and I made this point in this essay on Elon Musk's real fascist worldview, which all of you should read if you haven't yet, because (we immodestly insist) it breaks new ground. Also see the interview with one of the authors of "Muskism." newrepublic.com/article/2119...
also spare me these crocodile tears. you signed up to defend a movement with an explicitly racialized vision of citizenship. lie down with dogs and you can’t complain that people think you have fleas.
Now @apnews.com has a deeply reported story confirming the recently-hired ICE officer who shot a man in Maine had serious mental health issues and a long history of violence against women. This comes after ICE slashed hiring standards and rushed some into the field before background checks cleared.
The Associated PressICE officer who shot Colombian man in Maine has history of threatening behavior and mental illness, family and court documents say.
🧵This story is insane in so many ways that others are more qualified to analyze. Can only add that viz US foreign policy, Rubio, the nation's top diplomat, acting as viceroy of Venezuela is derelict, unconscionable, & impeachable. The SecState's time is scarce, valuable, and not outsourcable. 1/
Kai RyssdalThink. About. This. The U.S. Treasury receives the revenue from most of Venezuela’s exports, then disburses it gradually to Venezuela through the country’s private banks…. Mr. Rubio and his team set the conditions on what that money can be spent on, and by whom. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/11/u...

Jack Smith: "I think we are facing an attack on the rule of law that is different in kind and scope to anything I've seen in my lifetime"
Modern day fascism looks quite a bit different than 1930s fascism but did accompany (and was strongly associated with) new forms of mass communication
2 more thoughts on birthright: 1. The movement to overturn Roe and Humphrey's Executor was built over decades. It took an enormous amount of effort to manufacture that sense of scholarly viability (see: Teles, Hollis-Brusky). The right got 5-4 on birthright with a sloppy last-minute scramble
Supreme Court: upholds precedent, changing nothing. "Conservatives": THIS IS THE BIGGEST CRISIS EVER THE SKY IS FALLING WE MUST IMMEDIATELY AMEND THE CONSTITUTION AND REPLACE THESE TRAITORS
Tom JoscelynSteve Miller is freaking out now that the Supreme Court knocked down Trump’s/his Executive Order on Birthright Citizenship. The court’s decision was closer than it should have been - but many babies were saved from Miller’s maniacal hatred. And that’s a win!
What that says to me is we’re one vote from basically no rights being secure. A court that could flip on this easy a question could flip on anything.
As with some other things, i suspect if we have another dem president we will discover that the court did not so much transfer power to the executive as to themselves, ie they will find novel bullshit reasons to block a dem president the same way the find novel bullshit reasons to enable trump
the feds have done more to harass americans angry over good and pretti’s killings than they have to investigate them
Adam SteinbaughAfter federal agents shot Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, a New Yorker sent ICE's director an email in January comparing him to a Nazi. This week, DHS agents stalked him across New York. His home. A hotel. They gave his wife a letter warning of criminal prosecution. www.syracuse.com/news/2026/06...
Among their many sins, the Roberts Court is shameless about being factually dishonest whenever it suits them. They could have just straight-up owned that they're saying the president can do this because he's a gutter racist. Instead they spin an alternate reality where real-life Trump doesn't exist.
Radley BalkoKagan makes sure that Trump’s gutter racism — and the majority hand-waiving it away — gets into the record.
No serious diplomat would have signed a doc that (1) commits someone else (Israel) to doing things they didn't agree to, and (2) promises to not issue threats and then issues threats. Hands the other side leverage. Maybe a corrupt son-in-law and real estate investor buddy weren't the best choice.
The theory that “electable” means “work to appease right-wing bigots under the assumption that majorities agree with them, at least partially, and they prioritize it when voting” has been tried. It has failed. Try something else.
Given the way Elon Musk speaks of nonwhites, particularly from Africa, I would argue we should view his actions at DOGE to destroy USAID—which has led to the deaths of 600,000 and the millions more to come—as intentional acts.
David HoWho could have predicted this? 🤷🏻♂️
