To be making the argument in 2026 that immigration is a Republican leaning issue so Democrats shouldn’t campaign on it, and especially Trump’s overreach on deportations, is to be completely ignorant of the data and events of the last 18 months

Greg Sargent

This is the problem with the idea that Dems can't go on offense on immigration. It's not okay for Collins to have a clear field on TV to sell herself as a moderate on ICE. CNN has Trump 22 points underwater on this. Two other polls have Ds *tied with the GOP* on it! newrepublic.com/article/2138...

I took a look at the link between gas prices (high) and approval of Trump’s handling of prices (very bad) over the last 6 months. The data suggests evaluations of POTUS are sticky and negative, wouldn’t return to normal even if gas prices go back below $3 www.gelliottmorris.com/p/cheap-gas-...

i've got a good piece on this www.gelliottmorris.com/p/meet-ameri...

Meet America’s new swing voter: The anti-system voter. (Or: Why Democrats should think through nominating AOC in 2028)A new paper finds anti-system sentiment — not left-right ideology — decided the 2016 and 2024 electionswww.gelliottmorris.comJosh Marshall

Among many other things this is a good illustration of the necessity of untethering ideology and "fight" in intra-Democratic battles. The party is very united on fight, very divided on ideology. You unite on fight, let different constituencies/states find their center of gravity on ideology.

I didn’t know anyone used this. I’m glad to figure out that they do! I’ll update it after Michigan next week. :)

@gelliottmorris.com heya, do you think it could be possible to update your Senate simulator project's default settings following the MN/MI primary elections? It was last updated in April, and between the GCB/polling and recent election outcomes, imo it should get an update.

New @apnews.com poll: “Trump’s overall approval rating is at 33%, slightly below where he stood at this point in his first term and similar to where former President Joe Biden stood about one and a half years into his presidency, when inflation peaked.”

Republicans are trying to make the news cycle about anything other than Donald Trump and his incredibly unpopular domestic and foreign policy agenda. That’s why they set up this Fauci hearing. And everyone is taking the bait

very important to note that the vast majority of Americans, including a large share of the president’s own voters, think he is focused too much on immigration, Iran, and enriching himself and not enough on kitchen table issues morrispredictive.com/assets/surve...

New CNN poll: 73%, a new high, say Trump is not paying enough attention to the country's most important problems. Views on the war in Iran worsen, as economic issues remain deeply negative. @aedwardslevy.bsky.social has all the details here. www.cnn.com/2026/07/29/p...

some very influential people in the media and dem party do very lazy work on elections (especially but not limited to yglesias' refusal to acknowledge non L-R dimensions of voting attitudes) but that doesn't stop a lot of people from consuming that work and making big decisions based on it. sad

Jonathan Ladd

Counterpoint. The Cooperative Election Study (CES) asked national samples to place the ideology of every Dem nominee since 2012 on a 1-7 scale. They rated all the Dem nominees at almost the same place on average.

in statistics an optimizer typically finds the minimum of a loss function so technically by optimizer-maxxing you are min-maxxing

Josh Chafetz

I hear all this talk of maxxing, but I took economics, so I know we should be focused on optimizzing

tried to make this clear in the post but like if you have questions that would be editorially interesting to project to the district level, i can just... run it

I've updated the MRP model Strength In Numbers uses for polling at the state, district, and sub-county levels w a SOTA pipeline that predicts 50/50 states correctly in 2024 + every Senate seat in 2022. Now available to SIN Pro users and enterprise clients www.gelliottmorris.com/p/what-do-vo...
