Trump has managed to finally be directly, personally at fault for a bunch of ugly economic & social indicators that voters (usually irrationally) blame presidents for.

New in PN: Why Trump deserves all the blame for high gas prices "No POTUS has ever deserved to be hoisted on the petard of gas prices more. That’s not only bc of how he weaponized the issue before, but bc unlike almost every other POTUS, he's actually responsible for where the price is right now."

The slur "tonks" is used by Border Patrol to describe migrants. It's derived from the sound a baton or heavy duty flashlight makes when hitting a migrant over the head.

‘Pretty sure he’s wet:’ Immigration agents used racial slurs during LA sweeps, court records show. “Yeah, just plug us in wherever you see some tonks and we’ll jump out.” “tonks everywhere selling food.”  W/ @wendyfry.bsky.social calmatters.org/justice/2026...

Great point from @moiradonegan.bsky.social on the pod: Trump's gains with young men are vanishing as they realize Trump/Tate brothers faux masculinity isn't helping them: "They’re not being elevated in their own status." Donegan is just brilliant here all throughout: newrepublic.com/article/2135...

“Our results show a fundamental mismatch between the justifications for intensified immigration enforcement and the empirical patterns of that enforcement’s implementation. The majority of those arrested by ICE in the second Trump administration had no criminal conviction at arrest.”

My paper is out today in PNAS documenting how ICE activity in Trump 2.0 compares to the last 10 years and the mismatch between the action and the rhetoric. Joint with the fabulous @caitlinpatler.bsky.social and @elizabethacox.bsky.social www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

The answer is always no, because the ask from the Trump Administration will always be poorly reasoned, often poorly lawyered, sometimes illegal, and usually anti-constitutional. Your agreement places other institutions at risk, and you will end up like the restaurant owner in Goodfellas.

"Universities like Columbia are not better off for having capitulated last year. They compromised their independence and suffered reputational damage, yet are still subject to [Trump's] arbitrary behavior." Read @ryanenos.bsky.social on need to resist Trump: www.bostonglobe.com/2026/07/27/o...

It never got this bad at the Naval War College while I was there, but lots of people wanted to try to enforce this kind of crap. One reason I wrote as often and as publicly as I did was to make the point that civilian faculty do not lose their 1A rights. www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2026/...

Stephen Miller said just the other day that all asylum claims are "fake." A couple deported from the U.S. to Guatemala were gagged, bound, and shot dead. Their 14-month old found crying next to their mother's body. People like Miller don't care though because this is the point: ethnic cleansing.
