There's two kinds of people who call themselves environmental campaigners. Conservationists and scientists trying to protect the environment from further abuse and damage by human activities. And Right to Roam people who want to trample over anywhere they like without restrictions.
On the other hand, most UK rivers are full of harmful pollution, and the ones that aren't are generally subject to protection orders due to high significance for conservation. You don't want dyptheria or arsenic poisoning, and I don't want you destroying a rare ecosystem.
