So IMO "owning a farm" does in fact make one a farmer. If the person who owns the place, decides what will be grown, how workers' lives will be valued, etc isn't a farmer, then nobody is. The trick is that "being a farmer" just isn't magic. It doesn't mean someone is hardworking, smart, good, etc.
