I think I'll be baffled for some time as to what UK governments intends to do to help school leavers encouraged to do vocational jobs with career spans that end in their 50s or even late 40s to transition into a different kind of employment afterwards. Not much "long term thinking" going on here.

Anyone who thinks you can plan rigidly far ahead in the current technological and economic climate is delusional. Just look at the last 6 years - we went from "everyone needs to be in an office and learn to code" to "you can work from anywhere and AI will replace coders". bsky.app/profile/chro...

I take the Greens seriously as an expanding social milieu. Polanski's career interests converged with those of the Green movement for a time, but he's not really shown that he is anything more than a charismatic pitchman opening the door for people who will do the Greens more harm than good

The whole early release kerfuffle is one of those stories that would be covered better if any of the pieces explained "this is changing the threshold from completing 50% of your sentence before becoming eligible for parole, to 40% of the sentence."

You're entirely missing the point of each post pointing out that successful vocational training also needs to engage with how those skills can be used in the wider European and global market. Energy, transport, infrastructure building, shipping, vocational jobs with global opportunities

Often the pitching of vocational/technical skills among policymakers trained at university comes across as yearning for a world where there is a place for every man and every man knows his place. Successful tertiary education whether uni or vocational thinks far beyond such stagnation

Even in terms of vocational/technical recruitment, focusing purely in terms of local jobs for local people is both a structural as well as individual agency dead end. Some people want a local job, some people want to see the world, some want both. A successful system engages with that wanderlust

What UK policymakers often miss about Germany's training systems is how for many, some friends of mine even, it opens the door for European or global careers. You could start at Bosch or VW in Hannover and end up with projects in Shanghai, Manaus or Oman It is about so much more than the local

The other issue with vocational at 14 is implicit selection. Well off families will ensure their kids do academic courses. This happens at 16 anyway but at least we give everyone a chance to get a set of academic quals.
