To do a quick back of the envelope calculation, hiring a 21 year old on minimum wage in 2024 cost me: Pay: £19k NI: £1.5k Total: £20.5k Today it would be: Pay: £25k NI: £3k Total: £28k That's about a 36% increase in cost! The NI shift alone is basically a flat £600 more per employee.

I note Stephen doesn't go into it here, because it is its own column, but my observation would be that the net impact of the government's changes to minimum wage and NI thresholds is that early careers staff are a lot more expensive than they once were, the other side of "it's the economy, stupid."

Yeah, I said this a while back but a real question of "is Britain a high tax country?" Does become "do you have a plan 2 loan" because my marginal tax rate is 51%, which is French territory.

National Insurance which is 8% above 12k, and then drops to 2% over 50k, notionally this is because it's to normalise how much any individual pays towards the NHS and Care, and limit some paying a lot more, but as it all goes into one big pot it is just a second income tax.

The UK has two income taxes: Income Tax, which is 20% above 12k, 40% above £50k and 45% above 125k, but, for various political reasons, if you earn over £100k you lose the tax free £12k, so in that gap it becomes effectively a 60% marginal rate.

At a certain point you do have to accept that the Israeli government does not recognise other countries as having sovereignty in the same way they have sovereignty.
