People are much too quick to uncritically celebrate "progress" given to us by corporations without looking under the hood to see what it's doing to our environment and the exploited workers in the Global South that make our stuff. What I want is for that to be a much bigger part of the conversation

Also as someone who's actually worked on farms, y'all who haven't seem to have a weird picture of what it's actually like lol. Exploitative labour conditions make it shitty, of course. But when the working conditions are good, it's nice work! It's deeply human stuff! It's plants and fresh air!

Yup I worked on a farm in High School during the summer growing up. Paid 5.50 an hour(2000s) but I got all the hours I wanted. Good work, good exercise, and mostly good people. As a white guy it also exposed to "oh man some white guys are racist AF" when they're in a "Safe Space".

Modern farming, especially small scale, is heavily dependent on electrification (pumps, lights, heaters, etc.). It is entirely a product of industrial production and corporations. Those products are what can make it nice work and economical.

I would like us to work towards a society where people have a reciprocal relationship with nature, good working conditions, & collective ownership of land rather than replacing all forms of labour with robots so we can sit around dissociating on Netflix all day. But we can agree to disagree

We can each work towards the vision of society that feels best to us. I will remain skeptical of technocratic solutions while the supply chains remain exploitative, and I think the onus is on the tech optimists to clearly explain how the "improvements" they tout in the imperial core are sustainable

I am also realizing that a lot of people here are simply okay with their leisure time coming at the expense of prison slaves and Palestinian children. The people I am in community with don't have a ton of leisure time because we are fighting for the survival of our comrades and children

If you see organizing to end fascism and climate catastrophe as optional, then yeah, I can see how you'd feel that this system of exploitation has given you a ton of free time. For me, the labour of movement building is as non-negotiable as eating food, because my children's future depends on it

I guess it's comforting in a way to realize how many other people are actually miserable and overworked under these conditions. Because it means I'm not alone in recognizing that injustice anywhere cannot stand, and I can't ignore it any more than I'd ignore a leak in my own roof.

It's all work that must be done. We're all connected, and we'll be cleaning up these colonial messes for generations to come. I don't want to add to the pile by encouraging more unchecked resource extraction for capital profits under the guise of saving time. It's just kicking the can down the road.

BUT I am also a public educator and the conditions I'm working under are what they are, people are stressed out (despite all the free time??? very strange lollll) so I can take on the extra labour of trying to be as mindful with words as I can reasonably be, as often as I can

If you choose to spend all your non-working time on activism I understand and respect that. The fact that you are not required to toil in the fields for as long as the sun is up is the reason that you have the ability to engage in that activism though.

I don't think my ability to have a job working at a computer, where I'm able to work in an air-conditioned office (or remotely), is coming at the expense of Palestinian children. I have "leisure time" because I am not subsistence farming.

"when the working conditions are good" meaning when there is a lot of automation and automation-produced tools and goods that create these good working conditions. Without automation, working conditions are real tough and the profit barely enough to sustain a family, if lucky.
