The correlation between companies named after the Tolkien legendarium and their CEO/Founder being a chittering skinwalker fingering his own taint at the idea of draining the planet of all its resources and then fucking off to a sealed dome in New Zealand while everyone else suffers is extremely high

This is my favorite post of all time from you

I had noticed this correlation and I find it rather disturbing. I'd have expected more references to Ayn Rand.

Since I live in NZ, I can promise you we will be sealing that dome very tightly. Air-tight, one might say.

Ответ для maisiesummers

I was going to suggest ensuring the dome was well-equipped with highly aggressive New Zealand fur seals, but this is better

Ответ для Simon Petrie (he/him)

We've been actively removing ourselves from world maps and databases in the hope that they don't turn up and ruin things in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Don't. Tell. Anyone.

Bull shit. Say it loud and proud. We have nothing to fear. New Zealand is north and west of Australia.

I see what you did there

You. Saw. Nothing. Say it with me now... "There was nothing to see"

And secretly changed our name to...uh...Malaysia! Yeah, that's it!

Ответ для Simon Petrie (he/him)

All the doors and windows will have fur seals. No air gets in or out

Ответ для maisiesummers

Would’ve been even better if we’d done that before giving Thiel citizenship!

Ответ для newimprovedtom

Tbf we did make it impossible for him to build his bunker.

I love the idea of future archeologists being confused why the bronze age practice of burial mounds was broefly revived in mid-21st century NZ by extremely rich people... burried there with their toys and women...

You've got quite a way with words. You should write books or something.

Anduril, anyone?

There are zero billionaire survival bunkers in Aotearoa New Zealand. No domes, no abandoned missile silos .. He packed up and thankfully fucked off to Malta after the NIMBY's stopped him from building a private resort. Y'all are confusing us with Hawai'i, which is where they all are are

The thing most people don't seem to understand about Kiwis is that we are a 5.5 million person small town. We are literally 2 degrees away from anyone else in the entire country. EG: Someone's cousin works at the port, and his sister works for a big excavation company.. word gets around fast here

Hell, our homegrown billionaires cant even install a helipad next to the tennis court because multimillionaire neighbors lawyer up and wreck the vibe (true story) So, yea, Hawai'i, Malta, Brazil (they have form) and Thailand is where to look. We're keeping GabeN though

He definitely wants staff fitted with shock collars in said dome.

Although …

Some tech elites don’t want accountability — they want ancient legitimacy. That’s why surveillance and weapons firms like Palantir and Anduril borrow Tolkien names. Myth makes power feel magical instead of Orwellian.

Ответ для Matt Healy

Same reason they go tradcath; they want all the high church ritual. And then they bounce off it when they discover that unlike some radical Evangelical preacher in Texas the Catholics actually have standards.

They're all the Nazgul....

my Wikipedia handle has been “Narsil” since 2003 but it looks worse and worse every day

And one of these stains on the legacy of Tolkien has been giving some quasi religious talks on the apocalypse and the Antichrist, which he seems to be obsessed with. There is something very wrong with these "chittering skin walkers".

Love this- make it so!

Amazing prose!

Anduril kinda works in a racist way but the rest are just dumb af. Palantir? Creepy spying machine that, er... destroys anyone who uses it Erebor? Pile of stolen loot guarded by a dragon that, er... is killed and loses it all Sauron? All-seeing-eye that, er... famously didn't see shit and died 🤦‍♂️

It truly makes one wonder if they ever read any part of the books.

Anduril, I get the appeal - but Palantir is explicitly, in the text, a scam that rips off your info and feeds it to the nefarious villain who can then control what you think and do. That's the *sales* pitch?!? Like a company that delivers gifts for Mothers Day being named 'Pandoras Box.'

You pronounce the first syllable of your name incorrectly. It should be pronounced 'aw' not 'or', per the International Phonetic Alphabet standard: "Symbol Explanation for /ɔːˈdʒiːən/ Symbol Sound Description: ɔː Vowel sound (long "aw") as in law, bought. A long, open-mid back rounded vowel."

Ответ для Doug

The palantiri are not a scam. (I mean the company is awful but the ones in the books). They're just a communication device and for literally ages their use was simply communicating, warning of danger, showing far off lands. That Sauron turned them to an evil purpose doesn't make the device a scam.

Ответ для lotusfalling

This is a very odd distinction without difference. Was I not giving the Palantir a fair shake? I guess there was some valid use in the past, but in narrative that makes them relevant to us - nope. Do you also complain if the Overlook Hotel is called 'haunted' since some had pleasant vacations there?

When the proverbial goes down, and the CEO leaves for New Zealand for the last time, please be a good patriot and make sure the fuel tanks on their transport are only half-full - asking on behalf of most embarrassed New Zealanders.

Nikola Tesla must also be pissed his name is attached to a car running on DC, his arch rival's pet. And Heinlein must be confused on why Grok was attached to an AI, when it nothing remotely it. At least he didn't use Mycroft Holmes.

I am working on a plan to bury all oligarchs bunkers and domes post-apocalypse. I doubt anyone will put up much resistance. Just FYI.

When I was in middle school, a friend and I fantasized how we would split NZ and each take an island and live there in James Bond styling. Here I am in 2025 and thinking these guys stole our notes and actually thought they could do it. Seems there's never an original idea.

While NZers suffer.......

We need to convince them all to LARP with live blades.

Apparently, a personal obsession of Peter Thiel, who is an investor or founder of Palantir, Anduril, Valar Ventures, Mithril Capital, multiple personal funds called Rivendell, and (most recently) Sauron Systems. He's said to sometimes call Founders Fund (another vehicle) "the precious".

Sauron Systems? Because "Palantir" wasn't enough of a dogwhistle?

Yup. They're sort of second-generation -- founded in a startup incubator called Atomic (cofounded by one of Atomic's founders, Jack Abraham), which took Thiel money.

Part of me is wondering if they do things like that to be funny, but it's probably simply that they either have never read these books or they didn't understand key parts of them. (Yes, the eye on the tower that literally poisons the land around it with evil is evil.)

No punches pulled here.

Doesn’t Tolkien Enterprises own these names?

Ответ для Win Barker

IANAL, but my understanding is that you can't copyright a name. You can trademark it, but trademarks are contextual. If Anduril Industries started selling swords or Palantir started selling crystal balls, the Tolkien estate might want a word.

It's very strange and anti-everything Tolkien was about.

The way Tolkien would hate all of these people and their ventures.

Ответ для RK

Not going to make the meme... But "right wing politicians" and "tech bros" clasping arms for "completely missing the artist's point" feels apt here.

Ответ для Eric W

Pretty much this.

Exactly. They may have read (and misunderstood) the Wikipedia entry and ran off with it. Tolkien would unleash the Nazgûl on these morons.

There are nine uh, "legal persons" on the Board of Directors and the current CEO has been running things ever since the previous CEO got (checks notes) "thrust through the Door of Night" and left the position.

At first I thought the “Sauron” name inapt, until I realized he is essentially selling a product that exploits the terror of people in whom he has instilled fear—thus causing them to be the agents of their own demise. So yeah, totally appropriate.

The rest of the quote for anyone who hasn't seen it: "One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

Ответ для The Facts in the Case of Dr Dedman

I am a reasonably well-adjusted grandmother, retired tech worker and artist, who read both books as a teenager, recognized they were both fantasy, and moved on. I give credit to parents, teachers, and friends who gave me decent values and then encouraged me to think for myself. I was fortunate.

We don't need no stinking dome here in NZ unless we get to lock the door.
