Yuuuuuup. Also to be clear, in my voting lifetime I never identified with the Republican party (in the 2016 primary, I took a GOP ballot to vote against Trump, which I did at the polls, so now Ohio has me listed as a GOPer, which amuses me but is very very very much not accurate in any way).

YES. Knowing a lot of folks who know a lot of different and weird things is great (and having friends in general is cool). And even when your friend doesn't know the answer to your specific question, they probably know someone who does ("Let's ask Camaro Bob, he's got, like, 12 Camaros")

No, I don't tend to do stuff like that. The closest to that is when Wil Wheaton and I did stories about the other being murdered by Crocs, based out of us taunting each other on a @jococruise.bsky.social panel. But that was a very specific moment.

I mean, a cis straight white dude with a "classical liberal" education from elite schools who was already successful as a writer before his novels, who lives on a big spread in rural America, whose debut novel was a work of military science fiction? Yeah, I can see why people made assumptions.

The right-wing objection to me and my work happened largely not because of the plain text of any of my fiction, but because of my writing about politics and social issues in other places, and also because I've had a better career than they have had, and life is a zero-sum game to a lot of them.

Honestly much of science fiction/fantasy written by right-wing people is perfectly competent and readable, and some of them write very well. And it's often difficult to tell someone's politics from a text of fiction; when Old Man's War came out, many people assumed from it that I was conservative.

Also, to be clear re: previous tweet, everything is mostly fine. I have what we think is a mild shoulder impingement and the steroids are to hopefully bring down the inflammation. Otherwise it's mostly "Doc, it hurts when I do this" "So don't do that."
