Not to diminish its importance for Mac and PC history first in any way, but Myst was so big a deal that it was one of the games chosen to be launched with the Sega Saturn in Japan.

i think one of the biggest underlinings in just how bad the western industry has been about its own legacy is like. myst isnt just an old game. it was final fantasy vii before final fantasy vii. it was that fucking huge.

One of the few games big enough to get a direct spoof game of it (although that in itself feels like a product of a bygone era, like people go "you couldn't make Blazing saddles because woke" or whatever but really what you couldn't make is something like Fatal Instinct or Don't be a Menace)

If you take into account those console and the handheld ports, Myst and its sequels has been ported to the majority of consoles and handhelds too up until the 360/PS3. (3DS too) And then it got re-releases on Steam and GOG etc and the new versions of it on PS4/5.

I think I got Myst Masterpiece Edition with some CD spindle, never checked if it's the full game or a demo.

While the game itself has almost always been available on *something* for the past 30 years, sounds like its importance as a killer app for Mac/PCs and CD-ROMs has been lost along the way for some people.

the moment a household bought a computer with cd-rom that had a read speed faster than 1x, they had to buy a copy of myst. it was the law.

Yeah and we think of it as a PC game so much it's easy to forget that without the console versions the game would have never been made at all. Since Sunsoft funded its development in exchange for the console publishing rights.

by the time Riven came out i actually did have a Windows PC, so that was the first version i played i was so hyped for it! my family played a prank on me at Christmas that year where they put the game in a clothing box instead of wrapping it so it'd be the last thing i opened XD

the Riven remake is honestly so good it makes the Myst remake kind of disappointing in retrospect! XD between the improved character models and the alterations/expansions to the game's puzzles and lore, it makes me wish the Myst remake had been a more ambitious swing for the fences

...but then, I understand the Rime Age they added to the Myst remake was completely overhauled from the old realMyst version i finished the remake but i haven't played it since they added Rime, whoops!

I wholly recommend playing it with the Rime expansion, we really tried to sort of Riven-ify it with a whole bunch of new context and lore! I hope you’ll get a kick out of it if you loved the Riven remake. 😄♥️

were there changes made to places besides Rime in the update? i did know that Rime was overhauled but i didn't hear anything about changes in the rest of the game

The grand majority of the update is Rime! There are a couple small aesthetic tweaks to Myst that I fought for, but nothing quite so major unfortunately. 😅

Yeah, that was my experience too. Even when I had a floppy driven Amiga at the time, I'd still heard of Myst and drooled over it.
