I plug my car into the wall like an appliance, just 120V at 15A pissing into the battery while it's parked for hours or days. It's basically a refrigerator. What it doesn't do is require 480V heavy power and big transformers or on-site gas turbine generation.

Employment is generated during construction, after that only a relative tiny workforce is needed, like 50 people or less. In small and rural communities they are in, often they bring in outsiders to do this work.

Data centers power all the AI crap that is produced online, for companies, schools, business, government, etc. Part of what they power is theft of millions of pieces of copyrighted information. They're highly extractive entities, don't return anything to the communities they are in.

Everyone keeps going on about the electricity, yet nobody seems to be talking to their obscene water consumption. Do you know why? Electricity is a cheap and easy problem to fix and, if you yell about it loud enough, it distracts from the ACTUAL issue...which is a lot more expensive to fix.

They should (I’d like to say must) locate on remote coast and use sea water for cooling and be forced to build their own energy plants (wind, wave, solar) that feed surplus back to the grid. If we had a proactive government with its mind on climate and resource issues they’d force this.

Oh, forget the grid. There's insufficient generation to support the data centers. You may not know what a brown out is, but soon they will be *VERY* common as data centers suck down all the available power.

That is an excellent point! I went to a data center meeting last week & the whole thing was shady. They had 32 chillers & 50MW in their OG application. After it was approved, 1 page was changed that showed 72 chillers & 100MW. That page didn't have the approved stamp. They said 50-100 jobs. 1/
