For one, they're competing among each other. That's probably the #1 reason for so many new AI DCs. There's also AI training, which I last read was ~40% of compute ATM. There are more nefarious reasons I won't speculate on.

BUT! One issue that author didn't touch was that LLM models have to reingest/recompute the entire conversation, top to bottom, after each query. One query? Negligible, don't care. Spend an hour prompting over and over again? Not sure how to do that math, but it's gotta be mind blowing.

I read the link about that. The author is simply arguing that text queries are very low carbon impact. Image generation OTOH is a WHOLE different story and we won't even think about video. These AI DCs are not being built only for those activities.

Competition is the issue here. The richest tech giants on the planet are racing to outbuild each other. They're accustomed to moving fast and doing as they please before legislation catches up.

It's not so much the number of DCs, it's that monster AI DCs consume SO much more per square foot than traditional DCs. AI DCs are mostly processors, FAR more resource intensive than data storage. Very happy you noted the competition aspect. That never comes up here when people ask why so many.
