I think it might depend on which shot is being looked at. I've been seeing this one since early this morning and attributed to photographer Pete Kiehart.

When a pin mounted sign, even a cheap, fast one, is removed from stone. You have to at least patch and repair the surface. But sometimes there is cracking or discoloration so the most prudent approach is to replace the stone surface as if the sign was never there.

The whole thing is an embarrassment for USA. The letters could have been removed in a couple hours from a bucket truck. I think that another reason it went up is to protect the security of the workers - there are enough nuts hating that this is happening to pose a threat to whoever is doing the work. I'm okay with that tarp to protect them. Plus, that marble will need to be patched.
