Our most precious baby, Tadpole, was a drawf kitten, genetic (mama abandoned, we took her in just before she gave birth), while he was not officially diagnosed with short spine syndrome, the problems were the same. Against all odds (there were many) he graced us for three years. Miss him every day.

Short spine syndrome is more common than you imagine

My❤️! We talk about the human spirit. Animals are inherently intelligent and instinctively capable of overcoming adversity with our love and assistance!!! They teach us lifelong lessons of acceptance, perseverance, endurance & resilience to survive and how to do it well with compassionate care!!

I searched short spine syndrome and it seems to come up in a lot of inbreed dogs which makes sense. As much as I love these lil guys makes sure to cross breed as much as possible. Genetic variety is healthy.

Ok. I am now starting to become concerned that a certain kind of people are going to start trying to breed pets for the short spine. Like how we ended up with pugs and shihtzu. We need to end this trend before it becomes a trend. IMPO.

The AKC could, if they chose to, help eliminate this syndrome by requiring DNA testing for it in order to register with the AKC. They won't, though, since they exist to promote puppy mills, not dog welfare.
