One of my partner's and my first dates was to the Field Museum in Chicago back in 2012. We rounded a corner together and went OOOHHHHHH at the same time as we spotted a display on the K-T (before it became the K-PG, lol) boundary. We've been together for 14 years now 😁

We took a friend's teenagers to North Wales once and ended up looking for interesting rocks. Had to laugh when one of them picked one up, looked at it and then threw it away saying "ah, that's not a rock, it's just a stone"

The "sameness" of rocks is the basis for correlation, modern/ancient analogs, and geologic mapping. The differences are the bases for the deep time history of the earth, rocky planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and meteorites, as well as all living and extinct things. Noble pursuits, indeed.

In a survey on San Francisco I set a little geology reading, and it was so charming because the author kept tipping you off about where to see the best examples of the typical local schist or whatever, and it was full of photos of her standing in front of rocks that she was clearly thrilled about

also rocks contain various… things? which have diverse and sometimes unexpected uses?

My wife had no idea there were different types of rocks and knew nothing about plate tectonics until we got together and started taking road trips, and I described to her the geologic processes which formed the mountains we were looking at on the road, and roadcuts. She became fascinated.
