I started a new part-time role @nhm-london.bsky.social today providing curatorial cover in the Fossil Echinoderm collection. Job #1 was putting away some specimens which were scanned by a visiting researcher, giving me a chance to see some of these amazing Paleozoic #crinoids (sea lilies)!

The "sameness" of rocks is the basis for correlation, modern/ancient analogs, and geologic mapping. The differences are the bases for the deep time history of the earth, rocky planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and meteorites, as well as all living and extinct things. Noble pursuits, indeed.

I missed #MolluskMonday this week, so #FossilFriday is doing double duty with a small inoceramid. These bivalves could grow well over a meter across in the Cretaceous Interior Seaway, and it is generally suspected that they harbored some variety of sulfur metabolizing bacteria as chemosymbiotes. ⚒️🧪🦪
