The US administration has spiked fuel prices by starting a gratuitous conflict in Iran. They're also doubling down on automobiles as the sole form of transportation. It's almost as if the goal is to hit everyone in the pocketbooks.

All this to say, I think of Richmond as a better terminus/tie-in location for SMART than southern Marin. There are just way too few people south of Blithedale Ridge in Mill Valley to justify the kind of rail investments that they will oppose anyway.

That said, how you get regional rail *to* the eastern landing of the RSR is beyond me.

This is all 30-50 years out stuff, but I would love to see coordinated thinking about a new RSR Bridge with rail connecting to a redeveloped SQ, with a SMART station and ferry landing (which would be 10 minutes faster to SF due the ability to avoid the channel).

Yeah, not trying to crap on it or anything. Like you suggest, it's probably the lowest priority and also the most politically challenging inter-bay gap to fill.

An extension of SMART to the GGB would require a truly galactic realignment in Marin County politics. Electrification, fixing of the SMART-ferry gap, fast ferries out of redeveloped San Quentin - all of those things I can imagine before a southern extension.

i think people look at homelessness as a relatively new phenomenon and reason backwards to think that in the Before Times, poor people must've all been able to afford houses/their own apartments etc. Most of the housing types the poor used were actually just outlawed (boarding houses, SROs etc)
