The idea that we all want an "assistant" is revolting

Am never going to stop saying these things, even once British HE feels like a cold, dead moon.
Glen O'Hara*Government: we need a sense of place and stronger regional policy to bring us together! *Also government: it's okay to shut this local uni campus in an area of high deprivation! *Thick-as-mince country. No joined-up thinking anywhere. 🇬🇧 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

How can we go on
Kai Cheng ThomStarted reading a non-fic book by a trans woman autho published in 2017 & she cites several other authors who were active in that era and then I realized that almost none of these girlies except for me are still writing publicly and also some of them are dead & then I s p i r a l e d

just so good.

Thinking of that tweet re:everyone in academia knows a 60yo woman only known by her 1st name, who actually runs the dept/uni. (Which is almost at an anarchist understanding: not "make Dolores president" but "many Doloreses, no president" and "how can you Dolores too") +
Tressie McMillan CottomAnyway, your problem isn‘t finding the time to take notes. The problem is that taking notes is thinking and thinking has to be done by someone. women have been doing a lot of metacognition that looks like a task when it’s really thinking.

So a masculinist understanding of notetaking would think a transcription app is the same as taking notes. That’s why they think an AI transcript is a time-saver. They think the notes are the thinking because when a human takes the notes, it is.

I like this notetaking example. it is a good case of how gender works. Notetaking has never been about producing a transcript. It is a bureaucratic skill in the 20th c. organixarion because it is SENSEMAKING. Those women socialized to take notes? They have been doing men’s metacognition for them
Jennifer RomigNotetaking in meetings is tiny case in point - used to be some predictable social assumptions who would do it; now anyone can offer to do ”notetaking” by turning on the AI listener. Further interesting scenario is human recollection / notes (taken by habit by a person) conflict with AI summary

There is something to dig into about why people assume that last year's tech is always incapable. People still ask us at the store if there's a way we can look up books! If we have a website! I know bricks & mortar retail is old tech, but it's also really good tech!

AI CANNOT HAVE THE EM DASH I LOVE THE EM DASH
Rebecca FishbeinApparently folks think that writing that contains an em dash is a dead giveaway that it's from ChatGPT, which I guess is a sign that most people have never read anything in their lives.

I feel like companies deliberately manufacture things that are hard to clean specifically to force us to replace them earlier like why does my food processor have all these weird crevices that trap food/moisture & are functionally inaccessible? Why is there a weird seam/texture/hole on everything?!

Today is Roma Holocaust Memorial Day. Around 500,000 Roma & Sinti people were killed by the Nazis in the Porajmos. There was no state given to them after the war. Commemoration of their suffering is often diminished or forgotten. Racism towards Romani people across Europe remains acceptable.

Just raising some awareness of this bc an analogy is being made between one historical technology and universities and AI and universities now. And the implication is “relax, we’ll all just adapt to this new technology that some ppl are fretting over.” So we will probably see more of this.

Standing stubbornly in what I know to be right while people I trusted folded left right and center during a foundational threat to my very literal life and reason for being. It’s the same thing. It’s leading to thin trust with new people—people who are just going with the flow.

I went to the bookstore to donate some books and the owner recognized me from on here (!). We all joke about the shame of being recognized from social media but it turns out being recognized by your local bookstore owner feels like a huge honor. Like, who? Me?? Bookstores & book people! The best!
Rebecca ColesworthyModest—in size not awesomeness—modernist-y used book haul from Dove & Hudson in Albany. Always so impressed with the curation and number of recent titles (some used, some remainders). It really does double as a great local indie (NYRB, Verso, and UP titles, etc). Go go go! More books = good!

The original Red Scare in the U.S. was as much about destroying Black radicals & controlling Jewish dissidents as it was about the Soviet Union. I have read so much about the history.
