Sometimes this is because of the medium being adapted to, but sometimes it’s because different values of the new audience, which is something we should see as important. IOW adaptation can be a way to create criticism of an old text that may have a lot to be criticized about.

At some point you have to ask yourself what the point of adaptation is in the first place, which is often to make a culturally relevant work accessible to a new audience. And that often requires textual change.

I have lots of thoughts about how this relates to the role of big IPs in modern culture, often recurring with new forms every so often. A good recent example is Dune: the changes made to Chani are IMO a vast improvement over the original text, but people criticized it—you guessed it, as "woke."

The only thing I will say about Odyssey discourse is that people who are insisting that things must be 100% faithful with no alterations are acting in service of white supremacy. They may not think that's what they are doing, but they are.
