Watched. Easily the best of the MCU Tom Holland features, which isn’t a high bar. Still doesn’t touch Raimi (but certainly tries this time around). I guess I’d listen to arguments for HOMECOMING. Maybe. Probably not. But maybe. 🤷‍♀️

It’s in the still, quiet moments that SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY truly soars. Cretton really brings the emotion in. Holland’s best performance as Spidey/Peter, Jon Bernthal kinda frigging owns every moment, Zendaya is quietly devastating. This never feels like MCU homework.

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY is probably the best of the Holland films; rich with emotion, action-packed, very well performed. I didn’t expect to find a spiritual connection with Dustin Daniel Cretton’s SHORT TERM 12, and there are two action sequences that brought the house down. It’s spectacular.

It's really a shame they have done so little with Jessica Jones. You can introduce so many things and characters with her and her cases. A wasted opportunity.

While we are in this Greek Mythology moment, may I remind you that Emma Thompson is adapting Pat Barker’s take on The Iliad, and she’s struggled to get it made bc the focus on what acts of war against women and survival thereafter actually look like (the core of Barker’s narrative) is too intense.

This is probably the MFA holder in me, but I don’t hate that much of my timeline is currently engaged in discussions around a work of literature.

Performative masculine competence is all that matters. And that speaks to a lot of men. Nolan sets them free. But until he becomes at least kinda curious about human beings, he will never be one of the greats no matter what format he shoots on or how hard he works.

He's studied Great Filmmaking and the manner and style of Great filmmakers; and he's tried to boil it down to its essence without making films that make dudes spend a lot of time thinking about their feelings. There is no love in his films, it is only useful as a plot device.

I’m not saying all Nolan defenders are like this AT ALL but I have encountered, in the Nolan fandom, more people who think his films are simply “objectively” good, in much the same way many gamers discuss certain games as if they’re “objectively” good, than I have in the fandom of other filmmakers.

It's WILD how much Christopher Nolan has trained a lot of folks that he's a great filmmaker and when folks disagree they're like:
