Anyway if you're truly worried about helping people in your community get fed *right now* your local food bank is probably in need of donations and volunteers and has the advantage of already being an established presence in your community that people in need are aware of and go to.

Boy, you missed the point entirely. The point of the anecdote is that a competitor who was able to undercut them on prices drove them out of business which is what you have to worry about when rent & maintenance are being subsidizes and they're undercutting everyone else by 30%.

Honey, the store that they're putting in Manhattan will already be fully staffed by the time any of the stores already in that neighborhood close. This one city-run store can't just hire on every employee from a shuttered competitor.

Not opposed to the concept broadly, especially when going into communities that need it, but parachuting into a community that already has multiple markets probably isn't the play.

Hell, the community I live in lost an independent grocery store about ~10 years ago because they couldn't compete when a Safeway went in a block away. These are actual legitimate concerns people have, especially when you're putting them in areas that already have grocery stores in the neighborhood.

Celebrating people losing their jobs isn't gonna win people to your side, you fucking gremlin. Grocery has razor thin margins. A store getting rent & maintenance subsidized by the city while undercutting prices by 30% is one hell of an ask for existing grocers to compete with.
