Just exempting care workers would be ridiculous. Basically it would be a case of designing a policy to kick out care workers, panicking when you realise how stupid an idea that is, and then kicking out a load of engineers, scientists etc out of sheer stubbornness.

Aside from the obvious immorality the big issues are: 1. Bringing it in for people already here means kicking out lots of people even engineers, scientists, architects and vets earning over £40k. 2. Bringing it in for new people brings in a lot of complicated bureaucracy with no obvious goal.

There’s talk in the article about exempting people already here. That would be a big improvement, but then you have to question the point of bringing in a lot of bureaucracy just to force out EU nationals and Filipinos working in offshore energy or Indian data analysts who studied here.

This is telling. Work visa main applicants for entry only (excludes Apr-Sep 24 because of limited data). This would be even worse if student/graduate visa switchers, dependants, refugees and family/private life route included. (Countries assigned to ethnicity most immigrants from there belong to).

I think Home Office is now exploring options to mitigate this - but it remains too little known that most people told to wait 15 years would lose their status long before that. The % are of those here now but without settlement. Loss of status would be well > 250k people. Maybe 500k people.
