Another interesting question I thought of here: if people sponsored on the Temporary Shortage List after July 2025 can’t settle, would it be the same for the Immigration Salary List or is that under legacy rules? Could be significant for care workers, senior care workers and auxiliary nurses.

Yes it’s about 250,000-300,000 people including workers and dependants. This is excluding care workers. With them it’s about 750,000. Most commonly scientists, engineers, vets, chefs, retail and hospitality managers, graphic designers, sales, marketing, data analysts.

Fair enough if you tell people that beforehand but don’t expect many workers to actually come. It’s not okay to invite people in on an explicit path to settlement with family rights and then decide later that you want to deport them because you don’t like their skin colour.

You mean you like their skin colour better (there are plenty of EU immigrants that came that aren’t white but I doubt you knew that).

If you want workers you need to provide rights. Almost every job that has banned dependants has seen a total collapse in the number of workers willing to come here. Just high paid jobs in offshore energy that haven’t.

It’s not temporary labour migration, it was explicitly designed as a path to permanent status with the right to bring family. That’s no longer the case but it makes no more sense to retrospectively deport people as it would have to have fined people for smoking in pubs before the smoking ban.

80% of adult dependants are working. Of those about a quarter are working in care or similar occupations (eg auxiliary nurses).

Secured legitimate care workers: initially a lot didn’t hence the sponsor license revocations. But they later did. Over 90% are still on a valid work visa as I already stated (As of the end of 2025). That means they didn’t overstay, haven’t departed and haven’t changed route.

So you expect people to abandon their family to get a job. Would you do that? Dependants were allowed for care workers before March 2023. After that very few came.

Probably some switch to work in retail or hospitality, but this is very much a minority because in country visa grants to Nigerians and Zimbabweans are far higher for the health and care visa than they are for the skilled worker visa.

35% of visas for care workers sponsored in 2022 and 50% sponsored in 2023 were sponsored by companies whose license has been revoked. How do 90% still have a valid work visa? 65,262 care workers had visas sponsored in country in 2025, only 3,448 were student visa switchers.

Likewise care workers have brought an average of maybe 1.5 family members per worker. Not unreasonable when you look at family sizes in many of the countries care workers come from.

Yes. People acted as if students were bringing parents. It was crazy and misunderstood who the students were. A lot of international master’s students are in their late 20s or 30s so why would they bring parents rather than their spouse and children?

It seems to be Chris Philp either deliberately or accidentally misinterpreting the entry visa grants figure. Either he’s deliberately lying to the press or he doesn’t have even a basic grasp of the brief he wants. Either way it’s very bad.
