My understanding is that the CDC know good and well how, the question is WHERE.

any time you get an exploited workforce, especially one being targeted by the government so they are extra vulnerable to the vagaries of their employers, one of the first things that vanishes is ready access to sanitary facilities

Framing or just full out obliviousness or lies. We've always known how human feces gets into the food supply. At least anyone who has driven down I-5 in California has which means anyone who has spent even 3 minutes thinking about it.

But also: “water processing solids”.

on this scale it's not going to be workers it's probably the large scale use of untreated water in the process somewhere

They don't provide proper facilities for the migrant field hands, and then make them work when they are sick.  They are somehow surprised at this result?

The company involved is American but the lettuce is coming from their farms/processing facility in Mexico, where they can treat their workers even worse than they do inside the US.

This lettuce is from Mexico but yes the practices are bad on both sides of the border.

Oh my god. Soap and basic bathroom hygiene. Do we not have the political will to tell companies to provide basic hygiene to their employees at work? Especially to companies who have been the source of multiple outbreaks of disease in the past?

Yuuuup. Farm labourers under such a time pressure they can't even protect their bodies by *stretching* occasionally are certainly not being given adequate time to get to a sanitary toileting facility while working.

"Why do these Amazon trucks, driven by people who don't own the trucks and are not being given bathroom breaks, all smell like piss?!"

Also, here in rural France many people have sceptic tanks which need emptying from time to time. Guess where it ends up! The farmer grows maize (for his dairy herd) on the field behind my house. One year they spread a load of human waste there. It was the most disgusting thing I've ever smelt.
