I was raised by my parents. Loved Sesame Street, Mr Rodgers, Electric Company, also.

Well, in our defense, some of us are pre-PBS. We had “Educational TV”, its precursor.

My brother and I were children at the dawn of PBS children’s programming: Mr. Rodgers’ Neighborhood, Sesame Street, and The Electric Company. I have no idea how people might automatically know we were part of that PBS demographic, but I look back on those shows with a great deal of fondness.

The US is lucky to have PBS. We still have public broadcasting in the UK and mostly well regulated independent broadcasters too. PBS is the one US channel that has similar status and perceived integrity here.

I used to remember the entire PBS Kids block. This was back when Sesame Street episodes were still an hour long but prior to HBO getting the newer episodes. I had a bleak childhood.

I grew up in the 60s. I was told to stay outside until dinner. That was back when your parents sent you to the store to buy a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk. They gave you a dollar told you you could have the change. Still had 30 cents! PBS was watched by my parents, us kids watched Bugs Bunny.

We went from kid-friendly educational and socially conscious programming to dozens of channels of puff pastry.

Every once in a while when something mildly upsetting happens, my brain plays the sad music from Arthur.

Imagine if PBS was as well funded as its public broadcast peers in Scandinavia or the British Isles (YLE, SVT, NRK, DRK, RUV; BBC, S4C, Channel 4 and RTE). Unfortunately, most Americans refuse to have a Public Broadcast License fee... I'm in Finland now, and I cry over this massive disparity.

Yes, those that watched PBS seem to be kinder people.

The problem with the Monsters in Chief is, I think, a lack of curiosity, other than “What’s in this for me?” No time even wondering about other people. Thus their lack of empathy and abject ignorance. Knowing just a little about people makes it harder to hate. PBS gave my curiosity the world.

You can really tell the difference between those raised by PBS Kids* and those raised by the Disney Channel/ Nickelodeon, I've found. I was raised on NPR radio & books *(and the other public access digital kids channel whose name escapes me)

PBS started shortly after my first child was born. I watched PBS eith them and only got better each year. Now I have grandchildren and great grandchildren watching PBS. I also enjoy Britbox!

Nova program, “The Body Human” was fascinating. I pursued my nursing degree and became a nurse. I grew up watching the Public Broadcasting Station from the time I was an adolescent to present.

I could watch one hour of tv a day and 1/2 had to be educational. PBS raised me. Mathnet 4 Eva. 3-2-1 Contact was my jam.

Tuning into all the shows we had in the 80s and 90s across networks that were there for the educational benefit of children on their days off. Covering topics they may not see, or at least until later, in school, that opened the eyes and mind. Because smart children grow to be critical adults.
