Am I the only person who thinks they could slim it down, take out a lot of the pointless combat grinding, and still hit the plot points and deliver them with extra pizazz and *make it fit in one game*, even in a heightened visual presentation?

Me as I point to the Trails in the Sky remake which just keep the script basically entirely the same as well as the kept the exact same layouts of the maps, towns and individual rooms, just now full modern 3rd person camera scale. And they didn't need to split the games up more to fit it in!

I know the DQ remakes are a different team but everytime they say this stuff I love that the implication is that they just don't care about it

Maybe we should start a protest in front of their offices just chanting "less is more" until they give up on this nonsense

If only the biggest game of 2025 had some kind of crazy method for streamlining how much Game you have to make, called a World Map and Levels, and it was conveniently exactly how these FF games already work, but no FF6 needs to be open world + 5 discs of course

I'm playing through OG FF7 I have to constantly remind myself that it's a game made in 1997, so sometimes a nice room is just a nice room and not a place for devs to hide potions or spare change.

Was thinking about this and I'm struggling to reconcile the fact that the Wall Market is one of the best parts of FFVII Remake and also the embodiment of the cursed design philosophy underpinning the whole project

I just remember quitting ff7r when it was like Yo did you want don corneo's sewers to take literally like an hour cos we have to stretch every single dungeon out as much as humanly possible? And like, No???? Who would want that??????

There was an article the other day about how it would be impossible now to make a Walkman as good as they were in the 90's (Parts not made, supply chain gone, plans lost, engineers retired)... Starting to feel like that all applies to JRPGs.

Older ff games abstracting travelling the world by having your little guy trudging across a big map was really beautiful. It really helped imply a lot of the world's scale and gave the games more verisimilitude than the open world approach. ff7 still feels bigger than rebirth

many people who think they like final fantasy 6, but who actually cringe when they try to play it as adults, because their minds have been melted. so instead they insist it must be "done justice" by unleashing the game it was always supposed to be all along, Horizon Zero Dawn (Anime Version).

They traded actual interactivity for more "immersion". This kind of worked for Tales of Xillia 1/2, but that still relied heavily on classic RPG town exploration mechanics. The first ToX was also released all the way back in 2011.

I'm going to disagree with that because they certainly feel more lived in than in the original game.
