The library was my safe place from about 8 years old, and I'm 57 now. It was the place I could go safely & avoid my drunk mom & the man who molested me. My favorite fantasy was "accidentally" getting locked in overnight.

Libraries are important and necessary places that should be well funded and staffed. For all sorts of reasons. This is an example of one of them.

I used to go to the library to hide from my abusive father. I knew he would never come in there. He did go to the desk and ask for me when he figured it out, though. Libraries are safe places. ❤️

My eldest nibling works at a public library, and all the things they do make it such a complex job! They offer so many services that aren't even typical expected library services. Everything is falling to shit, but the library is still a safe place for so many people! Thank you, librarians!

I worked in an academic library. Constantly weeding books. Receiving unwanted “priceless libraries” from professors. Watching books being scooped up by small bulldozer for recycling. It was… depressing.

I love that libraries are a safe haven. I grew up in a house with domestic abuse and it was my escape. I spent most of my teen years there as did many others. Support your local libraries y'all!

We used to tell our children if they ever felt unsafe to go to our neighborhood library because it was a safe place and they would be helped.

Indeed it is. The library has saved my life in more than one occasion. It is also where the cool, smart and kind people hang out.

Didn't know there was so much dust in here, because my eyes got a touch leaky.

I’ve worked with the developmentally disabled for years. It was the best work I ever did. I miss my people. The LIBRARY IS A SAFE PLACE!!! WE WANT AND NEED OUR LIBRARIES!!!

Thanks for posting this. My sons, who have multiple disabilities have know for a long time there is always a friendly, kind person ready to help at the public library. I'm a firm believer in adequate funding for people with disabilities and libraries.

SSI helped keep many people with disabilities off the streets and not in prison. Not any more. We are going to see a huge increase in crime and living on the streets because of republicans and the trump administration.

My mother has dementia and really enjoys going to our local Senior Center. As a precaution, I bought her a lanyard with a copy of her ID card with our address and medical insurance card. On the paper side, I wrote my husband and I's contact information, her allergies and medical information.

As someone who works in a library, we do get a lot of people in such as this person, who need all manner of help. We won't be able to help with everything, but we'll do our best and we try to be a safe area! If you do need help and don't know where to go, the library is a good start! #BookSky

My greatest fear 🥲I have my sister who could be in that position if something happens to me . She was raised to look for a policeman if something happens . She is afraid of police now from watching ice assault people ! Everyday now she says cops bad👀how do I fix that she knows what she sees.

We had a ‘rough sleeping’ woman who came every day to the library. She disappeared for a while but returned. She had managed somehow to fly from Sydney to London in pursuit of her obsession, Christopher Lee. With no return ticket or funds the Immigration people put her back on a plane.

I loved reading this as it shows how our libraries have to be a safe place not only to learn to read in a quiet place but a place of safety for all of us who are lost in some ways. In LA I've seen librarians give street directions to lost tourists. Seen librarians help the homeless find books.

Yes it is. I remember the library being my place of solace in my teen years. 40 years later Libraries still comfort me. Something about silence and worn pages and old paper soothes my soul.

The library is a safe place was true for me in my childhood. My dad could be a difficult and violent drunk and I found that I could go to the library for hours without raising any red flags. My mom appreciated my studiousness, my dad didn’t care. So i read my way through my local library.

once, a friend of mine saved a confused/lost fellow by memorizing a phone number that he called out to the bus driver - driver was trying to understand his confusion (this, on an eight hour trip ending in a "bad part of town"). It was his parents' number, got him home safely (long story).

This brought tears to my eyes. Thank you

She may been lost and handicapped but someone, probably the woman/caregiver taught her a valuable lesson and she knew to go there. Library's are safe places!

This is typical and always warms your heart. I once had a new young employee who disappeared from work after checking out lots of books. I tried, but couldn’t find her- worried about her for years.

We need more libraries.

It is very safe! We have many patrons of differing abilities and I absolutely love helping them to read or spell words. We have a list of women’s shelters for those who need it. In September I’m going to teach English to non English speakers. Can’t wait!

This shows why children w/disabilities should be taught functional skills whenever possible. Someone taught him/her how recognize a library, how 2 get there & also to keep the note & show it if they needed help or were lost or confused abt how to get 🏡. Yes, libraries are a safe place.

As a poor brown kid in the city, libraries changed my life for the better and probably saved it in many ways. All it took was one cool librarian that paid attention and cared and a thoughtfully curated world of books, art, and music was opened for me in a way that teachers rarely had the time to do.
