I did not know O Brother was loosely based on the Odyssey. John Goodman as Cyclops made me laugh. 👁️

John Goodman's acting ability is SERIOUSLY underrated and I fully believe that it is only because he is heavy set. The dude (or, walter I guess) can switch from comedy to serious to seriously scary and make it look easy.

I bought this one in Suzhou China for a dollar or so and watched it in a hotel room with huge Chinese subtitles. I remember having the best laugh ever when Clooney started to sing. One of those moments in life.

Big Dan Teague. Between him, and Stephen Root as the radio station owner Mr. Lund what an absolute perfect film. Soundtrack is wonderful, Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson (watch Old Henry), John Torturro, Holly Hunter and many others. Easily a top 5 film.

That man is gold and I wish he got more recognition

Every time I see an actor use an accent that isn’t their default, I always wonder a little bit if it results in winces or appreciation.

I just got around to watching Damages and I'm pretty sure his face is rubber and he can change microscopic parts of it at will. I still use that line from Masked & Anonymous when Jessica Lange asks Uncle Sweetheart what happened to him & he says "How far back did you wanna go?"

John Goodman is a gd national treasure!

I always remind myself that very often the actor isn't given enough time by the production to work with a good dialect coach to get it right so I try to cut some slack but some actors are just so far up their own ass that they can't conceive the possibility that they suck at the accent

My boyfriend and I (South Carolinians) talk about this sort of thing a lot. Most of the accents in this film felt either authentic or very studied. I watched it for the first time and really enjoyed it.

Also I remember back in the 90s when Louisiana wasnt considered worth a mention nationally, John Goodman showed up to EVERY Mardi Gras parade like a gd champ

The way Goodman does a Louisiana accent is the way Louisiana folks do food, slow, warm, and with enough kick to let you know where you are. Then there's duck dynasty or swamp people 🙄 that everyone just has to try and mimic

As someone who used to have a southern accent, I like Goodman's accent. That said, the genteel accent that goodman uses is a rarity. Most southerners (myself included) have an accent that is much coarser.

Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri puts one at the intersection of American laugage. I am sure that helped him hit a southern accent.

There are films I simply cannot watch because of bad southern accents. (Diane Keaton in Crimes of the Heart, Olympia Dukakis and Shirley Maclaine in Steel Magnolias and everyone in Forest Gump.) There's no shortage of real southern actors, just a lot of tone deaf directors.
