As someone who has taught behind prison walls for more than 15 years, I love that you went to Rikers, Mr. Mayor, to watch the game with folx incarcerated there. To be seen to be human is so valuable, and also, so painfully rare in carceral spaces.

We’ve been talking about prison reform for decades. There are a places in the country that did it right with education & job training but not sure these programs are still in place. If we were smart, we’d have standards to help rehab people for the good of all!

This is beautiful. This is what rehabilitation looks like. People make mistakes and deserve love and compassion. The best way to correct the harm done is to give that person a chance to make amends. You can’t bring a life back, but people far too often argue the extremes when denying help to any.

This is great. I would ask that you continue this work by cancelling the building of the new jails that are scheduled to replace Rikers. A jail is still a jail even if it's nicer than Rikers. We do not need jails.

I know I’m not alone in wanting people who upon leaving jail/prison are able to get jobs, earn a living wage, pay for adequate housing and overall become productive, independent, law abiding residents/citizens. Better for them, our communities & our families. That effort starts during incarceration.

Thank you. Just thank you. Most people who are in prison don't need to be. That was the fact that was clearest to me when I worked in detention facilities. Instead, they are treated like animals when far worse criminals sit in CEO suites and seats of government.
