When things go off the rails I typically feel this is a success for me as a DM because that means the players felt empowered to come up with something I didn’t expect.

It’s an interesting challenge. I’m running a lich now and I decided the lich would leave the phylactery in a relatively obscure place, but still findable. However, the key for him was that his simulacrum (and other undead) is guarding it, with the idea that he only trusts himself with its safety.

I might use that in a future campaign! I like the way it ties in role playing with travel.

When they camp for the night I like to let them explore a bit and pursue PC character development via conversation. I also like to use dreams as a way to delve deeper into PC back stories. In those dreams, they have some agency and can affect what happens.

I like making liberal use of Sending and Scrying spells from the villains. It makes it feel as if the party has no real place to hide.

I enjoy putting them in no-kill scenarios. It sort of runs counter to what these sorts of games are designed for.

Tonight, the big bad of a home-brewed 2024 5e campaign that I’m running was revealed to be a lich, and I’m so excited!
