I too am pretty good at reading in a non-sexy way, as anyone who has seen me in leggings and a hoodie on my sofa with my Kindle on a Sunday afternoon will confirm
I prefer to read a few pages before falling asleep, waking briefly, re-reading what I’d read, thinking “I’m sure I’ve read this bit” before dozing off again & repeating.
I like to think of it as tantric sexy reading.
Goodreads and TikTok has made reading such a performative grind. If you're not reading 100 books a year and posting about every one, have you even actually read a book?
As a librarian, we met monthly in our service and ice breaker was stating what you were currently reading. I remember saying "Black Holes and Baby Universes by Stephen Hawking" and being glared at. I was responsible the non-fiction area!
I hope you glared back! I admit I've struggled through some horribly dry non-fic in my time, but most modern stuff is a lot more user-friendly. There is some really, really good stuff out there!
Yes. If you read, you now have to read performatively. I stand in my local park and read books through a megaphone, just so everyone knows how cultured I am.
