i think it was worth making sweeping changes to the action and themes of the odyssey in order to ensure it kicks ass. of all the things the original poem did for its audiences surely kicking ass was the most important one to maintain in adaptation

The whole poem is Odysseus farting around, defeating as many ancient world foes as is ridiculously possible, having a princess fall for his manly manliness, and then going home to show up and summarily kill all the guys who think they could replace him in his literally wood-worked bed.

His dog and girl stayed true, and he has the admiration of his young adult son. If all that isn't about being an ancient kick-ass action hero, I will eat my hat.

The great thing about the poem is that there's also a lot to unpack in between the action movie bits. It's why an opening question of "is Odysseus a good guy or a bad guy?" is so tedious.

rax i absolutely agree but i stand by my view that nolan either scuffed up the bits that could have kicked ass or left them out entirely because he was more interested in making a Nolan Film (i also stand by my unpopular ‘shoulda given it to todd phillips’ assessment)

It feels like at least two thematic approaches to the text stitched together and it's a bit jarring at times. "violating guest right traumatized me but also time to kill at least forty guests, only at most three of whom appear to deserve it" etc

Given we all just spent years witnessing the impact of war on everyday people live on social media in horrific detail, a "I'm doing this for honor and glory" message would have definitely hit different. (But people are also out there bitching that making Paul Atredies a despot is woke so...)
