Yes, I've made a lot of "mistakes" editing that've been valuable lessons learned. My biggest regret was trying to do every type of edit at once: developmental, line, and copy edits. It took way longer and I still need to make some structure changes, so now I'll plan to do them more in order 😅

I'll let you know if I decide to hire an editor for more professional feedback! I'm not looking for that at this time

Last time I had beta readers, I think I didn't ask the right questions to get the best feedback. This time, when I'm ready I plan to ask them: -Where are you bored? -Where are you confused? (E.g., about how something works, why a character would do x, etc) -What parts/characters did you love?

Speculative fiction, broadly defined! This one is a high-concept speculative fiction that I originally described as a dystopian science fiction, but that may not work for people looking for very hard science fiction. It has some medical scifi themes but spends more time on social science questions

Adult high-concept speculative fiction! I originally described it as a dystopian science fiction, but I think readers of hard science fiction might find it too soft for them.

In a world where descendant blood can double lifespans, Hanna is the sole donor for her family. But following her grandma's accident, she and her anemic sister are pushed to the brink of death. Hanna must decide whether to continue to accept the price of longevity or help tear the whole system down.

I also had another experienced writer give me very early feedback on my first few chapters (since I got that as a Kickstarter reward a while ago) and a few non-writer friends alpha read, but looking back I think I shared that draft too early - I've edited out most of what they read by now

I took the first 50 pages to Futurescapes Italy in 2025, and that feedback informed a lot of revisions in draft two. I had four peers and an agent mentor review the 50 pages, an experienced writer review a sample query, and another agent review a sample synopsis as part of the workshop.

said it before and i'll say it again: the number one writing hack is just to make friends. you can either spend an hour in an obscure & contentious reddit forum trying to figure out what a 2012 camaro sounds like or you can ask your buddy, the Car Guy

YES. Knowing a lot of folks who know a lot of different and weird things is great (and having friends in general is cool). And even when your friend doesn't know the answer to your specific question, they probably know someone who does ("Let's ask Camaro Bob, he's got, like, 12 Camaros")
