I agree with you that the show was more radical than its predecessor (though I'd hardly imagine Aang backing the Yellow Turban Rebellion or similar historical movements)... but I wish the writers had more space to explore its politics (and the internal diversity of its factions)

Shame we never saw any equalist moderate. They were all ALL BENDERS ARE ELITES while failing to acknowledge the class distinctions even within benders (like Bolin or Mako), or having them cheer as the leader threatened to spiritually neuter children on stage. The equalists had a DAMN fine point!
