I mean, in an odd way, it's a more orientalist move than using real world Chinese, because it says "nobody will actually understand these characters on screen, so we might as well have something we own." There's a world where this would be brilliant, instead it's dismal. What a shame!

But-- deploying this as a total brand replacement in Avatar Aang is a wretched move. It says that the use of hanzi in A:TLA was a mistake, and that this should have been how it worked all along. It sends an insult to the langauge and to the original shows.

Avatar is a universe where, practically, the characters speak English but use Chinese characters. Developing a phonetic script for English is cool! It's more honest than, say, Aurebesh just being a written English cypher. I love that it has a brush form, too. This is thoughtful and beautiful design.

Likewise, I don't think changing the writing system is bad. If this was done for Seven Havens alone, it'd actually be a great way to show how culture has shifted in the century since Korra. Many cultures developed their own written scripts after initially using hanzi; there's precedent for this.

My opinion on Avatarian is complicated. Using hanzi as the script for the Avatar universe was actually pretty elegant-- it's a real-world written language that stretches across multiple languages and cultures. For a show that's interested in multiculturalism, it adds a verisimilitude.

Yeah! But the anime of it was incidental; the issue was that Pokémon the overall property was indoctrinating the youth to reject creationism because Pokémon "evolve" to get stronger.
