Once you understand that this is a model of science written by non-scientists who hate universities but love venture capital and redirecting money to political allies, everything makes a lot more sense. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/22/u...

Is it bad if the new science funding report doesn’t know how big an R01 is? Asking for a friend.

Q for academics, especially sociology and related fields: has anyone written up a guide for advising PhD students on applying to non-US job markets (either a specific non-US market or more general strategy)?

Many point to Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, a natural instinct and there are indeed many parallels. The US track record is appalling (as I've written abt all of them). One key difference w/ Vietnam/Afgh at least: other presidents (even Trump 1.0!) decided not to attack Iran (and Iraq's regime). 1/

Can't get numb to this: The United States is stuck in a war it started, cannot end, and may further escalate to no avail, having dismantled its diplomatic apparatus, depleted its military stockpile, and destroyed its credibility. A historic strategic mistake harming millions in many different ways.

This was predictable. And it was by design. Republicans ensured that many states will effectively cut benefits with burdens--and the states will take the political fall for it. I wrote this a year ago. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-big-be...

It's ALMOST like if people read @pamherd.bsky.social & @donmoyn.bsky.social's Administrative Burden: Policymaking by Other Means, they could have predicted precisely the adverse effect of layering on new administrative burdens to accessing life-saving food assistance. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/20/u...

Researchers replicated a study on bias on hiring w/ AI. When one candidate failed as a doctor, AI stopped hiring anyone from that candidate's group as a doctor & hired them as janitors. AI was more likely to stereotype ppl than humans in the original study. www.technologyreview.com/2026/07/20/1...

AI is more likely than humans to form biases when hiringAI doesn’t just learn stereotypes from its training. It can cook up new ones, too.www.technologyreview.com

We do conduct, write up and publish with our doctoral students. But in 18 months you don’t have time to understand the existing literature, and make a significant contribution to knowledge. 18 months is a Masters, not a PhD.

This is a good example of the "sticky misery ephemeral bliss" problem of misinformation. The college affordability crisis of the 2010s has largely been addressed. Nobody knows this.

The US built the greatest talent magnet ever, attracting the smart, skilled, and striving. They’d come to study, then stay and build things here, or leave with positive impressions and fruitful connections. Helped make the US wealthy and powerful. Then America chose to throw it away. And for what?
