An important and surprising discovery arriving the same week policy leaders in Washington tell us we no longer need federal investment in the biological and life sciences.

Sociology has epistemological (science/nonscience), methodological (qual/quat), and political (left/right) divides. It's best when these groups overlap (hi, fellow overlappers!). The external force of right-wing attack is forcing the political divide to the fore. Bad, but maybe inevitable.
