Really interesting story here. You know how the hyperscaler cowboys are powering their data centers with gas turbines? It turns out the demands of AI are not very friendly to those turbines. They're supposed to last 5+ years & instead they're wearing out in under 12 months!

Harriet Weber

Here's the deal with the pre-review study Tesla funded on turbine carnage. This is my first piece on the Data Centers Breaking Things beat. TLDR; AI training is wearing out, even breaking, a critical source of energy for AI training www.investors.com/news/turbine...

In the upcoming super El Niño, researchers are expecting significant disruption to many Pacific Ocean fish fleets. Here’s why it matters https://www.latimes.com/science/story/2026-07-29/record-breaking-el-nino-could-gut-californias-crab-salmon-fleets?utm_medium=social&utm_source=bluesky_

I wonder why the party of toxic masculinity, PUAs, and white (male) supremacy has such a domestic abuse problem. (Narrator: he does not wonder.)

I once again will hop on my soapbox - be more precise with our language around AI. Machine learning has a lot of good and even great applications. And you don't have to burn down the planet to run them. In fact, some cases even save on computational power (looking at you, weather models).

Emily Johnston

You know what this ISN'T? An LLM. Once more for the folks in the back: nearly all of the actually useful, genuinely promising things that AI can do for us have nothing to do with LLMs & planet-devouring data centers. Hope, not hype. Serving us, not serving us up to Big Tech. @sciam.bsky.social
