I worked at Disney a while ago. Do you know why theme parks are so safe? Because OOSHA reps can walk the track on any ride at any time and any safety violation they see is a $10,000 fine. Each. Theme parks are not safe because the company cares. They're safe because it's cheaper to comply.

I am not personally aware of anything like that, but I also won't claim to be an expert on the subject with cutting edge knowledge. I'm in the forecasting space, so I know what I need to know to be effective.

There are plenty of other spaces - bias correction, hurricane forecasting, model downscaling, probability estimation for severe weather within a model domain...the list goes on. We have to be cognitive of things like non-stationarity of climate (which impacts the validity of the training data).

At this point we have fully global simulations running based on decades of both real and forecast training data at multiple centers around the globe. These require a physics-based starting point - the data assimilation model that takes observations and interpolates into model space.

I once again will hop on my soapbox - be more precise with our language around AI. Machine learning has a lot of good and even great applications. And you don't have to burn down the planet to run them. In fact, some cases even save on computational power (looking at you, weather models).
