related to another bizarre feature of political discussion in the US: that it's supposed to mark you as reasonable/bipartisan/fair or whatever that you take these discourses on their own terms. as opposed to marking you as (at best!) a mark

Adam Serwer

It is genuinely bizarre that we’ve become acclimatized to right wingers throwing a tantrum every time a black person (particularly a black woman) is cast in something, but are also supposed to pretend that this is not racism but related to some other substantive concern.

Thrilled to join the show with @faithfulpolitics.bsky.social along with @andrew-whitehead.bsky.social. We took stock of our Christian nationalism research over the past 10+ years, clarified definitions, assessed the state of the nation, and outlined hopes for the future. Check it out.

Will (Faithful Politics)

The final week of Church & State 250+ begins with a doozy. @profsamperry.bsky.social and @andrew-whitehead.bsky.social explain Christian nationalism and the question at the heart of it: Who belongs in America, and who should hold power? youtu.be/6VdQcqYMCYk

After the warped TESCREAL worldview (allegedly) hinged on stuff like Peter Singer’s utilitarian "would you save the drowning child across the world”, it’s significant that kids in those places are being rhetorically erased by people like Musk, who just literally erased them.

FIU had a search for a law school dean, 20 candidates. President and Provost (themselves with no academic experience besides a weak paper she published on the job) declare it a failed search and hire their buddy, a Trump lawyer, who didn't make the top 20, and was just sanctioned by a federal judge

‘Unusual’: How a Trump attorney became interim dean of FIU’s up-and-coming law schoolOne search committee member called the incoming dean, who’s worked as President Trump’s attorney, “a poster boy for ethical corruption.”amp.miamiherald.com

Yet another right-wing attack on sociology. Very telling that it was written by a former NYT opinion writer. Although much better informed than most in its genre, it makes a charicature of the discipline, ignores the politics of the critics, and contrasts sociology with a mythical “hard science”.

Essay | Is It Time to ‘Liquidate’ the Study of Sociology?Sociology has long been tasked with investigating society’s most pressing challenges. But these days, sociologists’ greatest obstacle may be themselves.www.wsj.com

Americans have more confidence in higher education than in big tech companies, and the gap is growing rather than shrinking. The higher ed-doomsday pundits need to get on board with the real vibe shift in public trust that is happening right now.

Mark Copelovitch

I look forward to all the reports & coverage about all of the internal problems & mistakes of all of these other institutions, in the same way that universities are constantly blamed (& blaming themselves) for “declining trust.” “Compared to what?” news.gallup.com/poll/712436/...
