I am very supportive of these (new) institutes for democracy research and advocacy. I am also very skeptical about how supportive the university administrators will be when the institute gets criticized by (right-wing) politicians and donors.
This was as predictable as it is shameful. Kudos to the few countries that do not jump on the nativist train (this time).
Erdogan knows that his democratic period is over and he is now oppressing virtually every alternative. The aim of this attack seems to be the splitting of the oppositional vote, which might work out.
Welcome to our reality! These groups undermine U.S. higher education in many different ways, including: 1) inaccurate or incomplete teaching materials 2) self-censorship by teachers 3) fewer people who want to teach 4) less money because of lawsuits after wrongful firing teachers
I am not so sure Trump ever “strategizes” in such a way. But he is not the first to flaunt his corruption, it has been done by various authoritarian leaders and it is a way of showing their strength to both their opponents and their supporters. “Look what I can do”
Greg SargentTrump makes his corruption open and explicit on purpose: It helps normalize and numb people to it, and puts our institutions on notice that they need to bend the knee to him. Check out this exchange with @leahlitman.bsky.social on this point: newrepublic.com/article/2138...
Very insightful thread 🧵
Sarah TaberA very serious Rural Politico once told me "Dems have to go to farmer meetings! We gotta be where the people are!" I was in fact in a farmer meeting at that very moment! So I live-texted him the meeting. They were complaining that they want indentured workers that they don't have to pay or feed.
How heb ik dat nu gemist?!? In Gambia speelt/de ook een PSV in de hoogste divisie. ❤️🤍
I seriously doubt UEFA will actually boycott World Cups if Infantino successfully sells FIFA to his MAGA and Saudi friends. In fact, I doubt it will really stop the plans. Rather, it will soften and rename them, so that people can continue to feel good about watching modern football (see ESL).
The conservative bias of both journalists and politicians is one of the major problems of liberal democracy today. After ignoring, and often even dismissing, far-right voters for decades in the late 20th century, they have declared them "the people" in the early 21st century.
Rahel Freiburghaus(Swiss) politicians are bad at knowing what voters actually want. There is a clear conservatism bias: Political elites systematically perceive voters as more conservative than they really are, irrespective of the actual policy debate (e.g., raising retirement age) www.defacto.expert/2026/07/28/s...
