Pretty stoked to dive into this one.

I like to think that I understand human nature pretty well. And I‘m pretty good at empathizing with perspectives I disagree with. But I do not get the attraction to casinos and gambling. Not judging either. Just do not share the attraction to either on a personal level.

Always conflicted when I check into my Airbnb, find it just charming, scan the book shelf and… discover I’m renting from MAGA. D’Souza and Chaffetz? And you left these here for guests to discover? Yikes.

Can't imagine how this reflects well on any President. During Obama's 2nd term, over 4/5 of adults said they were very/extremely proud to be an American. Only 4% said they were only a little/not at all proud. Two months ago, only about half of Americans said they were very/extremely proud. @prri.org

This study hits on something I've anecdotally observed that we tend to think people we disagree with politically must be incompetent at jobs that have nothing to do with politics. Like knowing you voted for X necessarily speaks to your competence as a coach, dentist, accountant, or mechanic.

Saw The Odyssey last night. I’m just not sophisticated enough to have any take other than that it was an enthralling movie. Never once checked my watch, which is really saying something.

You've got two major kinds of right-wing pronatalists: 1) The kind for whom more babies is the goal and they're pragmatic about whatever policies *they think* will promote that. 2) The kind for whom priority # 1 is a trad social order (2 married hetero Christians) and kids coming *only* from that.

Great question! When I get to a natural stopping point like finishing a chapter I stop word-counting & spend early morning writing time on editing. Then onto the next chapter & my daily 500 words again. BTW, this is only for books. For articles I go by section: methods today, results tomorrow, etc.

To this advice I’ll add a corollary: remember Anne Lamott’s rule of “shitty first drafts.” The point is to get words out. You can edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page. Don’t get so stressed about wordsmithing on the first pass that daily writing even short assignments becomes too daunting.

Book-writing hack: 500 words a day. Everyday. That's the rule. Often more, but never less. And most often as the first task of the morning. Other writing projects like articles can get attention later in the day, but the 500 words get priority. You'd be surprised how quickly a book comes together.
