debt, development, infrastructure, the economics of racial inequality, and the myth of racial progress. I express my own views

here is another response to “well AI is good at ___” —the race to make LLMs the omniscient multitool is diverting resources and attention from the bespoke models like this protein folder, because a) most people don’t know the difference and b) this is about selling a product.

Dan McQuillan

AlphaFold was always bait-and-switch; now Google confirms it. A hyper-narrow bioinformatrics model with actual science bolted on whose guesses can be experimentally checked was never a licence for socially-applied slop at scale, but it's done its job. Effort transferred to LLMs.

ca. 2018 I attended a planning consultant community presentation on their 200-p report on problems with Knoxville's zoning code, then the smaller presentation the next am, where the same presenter told attending “stakeholders” (developers) she had only read Knoxville’s code the previous day

WE’RE not cutting things because we WANT to! The very sober deliberative experts at the CUTTING factory were kind enough to take our case, and to all of our disappointment, this is just what they think is best.

[audience switches to jazz hands to signal support] city council: Waving at us is distracting us.

Police arrested a teacher for clapping during a city council meeting last week. They went to the meeting of Emporia, Kansas City Commission to speak out against a proposed hyperscale data center that would sit on 1,000 acres of rural land. @mjgault.bsky.social reports www.404media.co/person-oppos...

the same type of people who "couldn’t do" pronouns and are aghast at the inclusion of multiple gender options on a survey are like “please record your sex ten different ways, including official documentation of the appearance of your baby-self's genitals"

Ethel Weapon

The implementation guidance equates "Sex at birth (observed)" with "phenotypic sex". Which suggests trolling or massive stupidity. Sex at birth doesn't determine what a person's "phenotypic" sex is. Gender affirming healthcare can change primary and secondary sexual characteristics...

have been reading @rahimk.bsky.social's great book tracing, among other things, how military housing eventually turned into public housing in LA County... this has been the real fed public-housing policy for decades, when it’s never “it’s too $$$ to build new units now"

What could up to 2k illegally deployed troop apartments cost, Michael? $148,000? Each?

After the warped TESCREAL worldview (allegedly) hinged on stuff like Peter Singer’s utilitarian "would you save the drowning child across the world”, it’s significant that kids in those places are being rhetorically erased by people like Musk, who just literally erased them.

"zero kids" & "traitor to the west" are demands for white people's fealty to whiteness above all else my latest with @gregsargent.bsky.social newrepublic.com/article/2135...
