I reckon this is fine. It's just summer, right? Look it up!

James Ball

"Kew Gardens has had a weather station since 1871. This July was, based on third party analysis of Met Office data collected at the site, the first calendar month on record where no rainfall was measured at Kew."

Microsoft are terrible but they've never offered this.

Heather Burns

The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.

Today is Venn Day, in celebration of the mathematician John Venn, born on this day in 1834. To commemorate the occasion, here’s a poem in the form of a Venn Diagram.

Certain posters are not beating the allegations that a certain type of British journalist is incapable of extending empathy to anyone other than the 50 or so colleagues they run into at dinner parties, a grace they extend to those 50 people but think minorities & the disadvantaged are unworthy of

On Sunday, South Korea saw 108.5° F (42.5° C), its highest temperature on record. The South Korean weather agency urged people to “immediately stop all outdoor activities,” warning that even “indoor spaces without air conditioning are dangerous.” e360.yale.edu/digest/el-ni...

If I had very strong views on one subject, I would not post a glowing tribute to someone who shared my views on that one subject - no matter how important it was to me - if simultaneously it was very clear that they were an excruciatingly unpleasant individual in many other areas.

Very disappointing from the new Prime Minister, very much sounding like the previous PM. These are among the world’s most vulnerable and desparate people. They need safe routes and humanity from responsible politicians, not grandstanding. This isn’t doing politics differently.

When someone is described as "often controversial, never boring" in 2026 it just means: full nazi but also part of the establishment.

Rod Liddle has died. He blazed a trail from international socialist in Labour to the xenophobic "left conservatism" of zombie Social Democratic Party. He wrote for the Guardian until 2003, then increasingly curled out his stale pale male opinions in RW press. He'll mostly be remembered as a nonce.

The worse the person was, the more potent the euphemism required.

Andrew Male

A great day for anyone playing Obituary Euphemism Bingo. 66. “Provocative” 14: “Uncompromising” 21: “No topic off limits” 10: “One-of-a-kind” 28: “Led life to the full”.

Oh this is very cool. The veg yields *increased* under solar panels and/or used less water.

Your empathy is welcome and the kindest response. 29 homes lost in our village. The heartbreak and loss that causes, especially to the elderly is horrible. Souvenires, pictures, all gone.

Victor Luftig

I'm sorry for those losses. Necessary to pause and think of the grief associated with every home lost--there and elsewhere, to fire and otherwise. (I live in a place haunted by evictions from 100 years ago and 300 years ago.) Climate change will bring many thousands more.

After the cruel impact of changes to the skilled worker visa scheme, there’s another hostile action from the Home Office, this time directed at EU citizens granted right to remain after Brexit. These life shattering letters disrupt peoples’ lives built in the UK and are are utterly shameful.

I’ve always been very uncomfortable with how ready the consensus is that environmental protestors ought to be policed through spying. The main ‘dangers’ posed by these people aren’t actually real dangers for the most part, whereas the harm caused TO them is horrendous.

flyingrodent

Everything I’ve seen about the spycops inquiry suggests that it was always about bullying, molesting and generally fucking with a bunch of greenies and antinuclear protestors, because they are the kind of people the state can fuck over and stomp on with impunity, for fun.
