Vigils are not the place for Civics 101, But cities in WA cannot make their own gun laws. Only the state can. And even though we’ve been making huge strides thanks to @momsdemandaction.org & others, our work failed to prevent this tragedy. I failed you. #waleg failed you.

I was at the vigil organized by community members from gun violence prevention groups tonight at #Seattle Center. Some folks came and heckled @mayor.seattle.gov. Friends. I know you’re angry and scared. But if I may, let me offer you some better people to yell at. Yell at me. And I can say why 🧵

I also encourage people to watch this video clip. Watching a man step between the reporter and Chief Barnes is really something.
Erica C. BarnettUm holy shit - Police Chief Shon Barnes got PISSED at @soseaemerald.bsky.social reporter Connor Nash when Nash asked about my reporting that Barnes is out of town a lot; Barnes said, "No YOU listen!" and then angrily said my "reports are WRONG." My reporting is based on his schedule.
Our laws are set up to punish victims of violence. What the fuck are we doing
A. ZivartsGot hit by a car on a bike ride today. Fortunately it was very slow speed. The car was fully stopped and drove into me as I was in a crosswalk. I was actually really scared at first because I thought the driver saw me and l was actively trying to kill me...
This was done because of advocacy by the neighborhood. They have years of back and forth designs with SDOT to narrow the road, install a Greenway, and other traffic calming. The fire department intervened and vetoed all of it and this is the result. www.seattleparksfoundation.org/project/frie...
Thinking about the council talking about needing funding in the budget for additional resources to help people in need along Aurora Ave and to combat gun violence and wondering where exactly they intend to find it. The same council that passed last year's budget and expanded the deficit.
Now Council is proposing to pull this funding from our general fund, which is already facing a $175 million deficit. I look forward to seeing which critical services they plan to cut from the general fund to make their numbers work.

We just announced a proposal to fund universal free school meals for all Seattle Public School students starting this fall, while maintaining new investments aimed at ensuring low-income students have food on their tables at home. Some investments are just too important not to make.
This was decided in the last 24 hours due to public pressure and outcry. Yesterday's amendment would have had zero debate if they had been planning this all along.
